Ocean Village 2 fantastic

Reviewed By: hill, Boston on 1st Dec 2008

My husband and I enjoyed our third cruise of the year on board Ocean Village 2. We had cruised on QM2 and QE2 in January and july respectively. The reason we chose this cruise apart from the tremendous value of the price charged my husband is a sportsman and really prefers to dress casually so, having done two formal cunard-transatlantic/">transatlantic/">cunard cruises earlier in the year
I suggested the OV2, which does not have a dress code We did a week in the med and then a transatlantic crossing to the caribbean, for a further two weeks We were amazed at how calm the atlantic was and thoroughly enjoyed the extreme tranquility of there being no other ships for days in our sight. My husband is vegetarian and extremely allergic to fish so it was important to us that he had nice food. We need n ot have been concerned at all! The food was tremendous, all buffet style, but there were usually at least three choices of hot food at lunchtime and for evening dinner, besides a wonderful array of cold dishes including very appetising salads. We had talked about trying james Martins Bistro restaurant whereby you pay a cover charge of £15 a head if we had eaten there my husband had no choices, it would have to have been the veggie starter and the one veggie main dish on offer and as that did not compare to the other restaurants there was no contest. For my own part, I thought the general selection was excellent for meat and fish eaters! It would have been very difficult to have got past the staff when entering the restaurants without the obligatory squirt of alcohol gel to help eliminate the spread of noro virus, utensils in the self service options were regularly exchanged during food service, and the plantation restaurant was subject to a thorough clean twice through our three weeks of holiday. All public areas were kept spotless and I can only summise that when there are outbreaks of the noro virus it would be very much down to the individual traveller to make sure they adopt the hygene rules without question. Our cabin was extremely spacious and comfortable, and our steward extremely obliging. We did not do many excursions on offer as we now prefer to make our own arrangments, but when compared to local offering of tours etc,I believe the OV2 was well in line on price. One big disappointment was the internet facilities, we tried in vain on many occasions to contact our family on line but without much success, and were give a refund. The transfers to and from the ship were very well executed, and the one problem was in Barbados when we went through immigration on the ship the queue went on forever. We thought the entertainment was poor in the theatres at night but did not partake of the various quiz evenings or art auctions as that is not for us. We checked out the kindergarden and thought it was spot on, and could have imagined our grandchildrenin there having great fun whilst mummy and daddies could sunbathe nearby. We were therfore disappointed when we discovered that OV2 will be moving out to australia in 2009 after a refit, and OV will also do a similar thing in 2010. To sum up the OV2, we thought it was fantastic value for money, food very good, staff always helpful and we will certainly do it again, despite the fact that we are cunard fans. Well Done OV2.

What a lovely review, we are going OV2 first week in May, Eastern Med, really looking forward to it after reading your review. Thank you for taking time in writing it. We have booked a suite thought beind she is going to Australia 2009 we would spoil ourselves. Just wonder where we will be able to find a substitute. Thanks once again. Sally.
