Cruise Reviews

Fantastic July weather in Norway but rough crossin

Reviewed By: Hearnshaw, Huddersfield on 30th Nov 2008
Cruise Line: P&O Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Oriana Sailed: July, 2008
Destination: Norwegian Fjords Age: 46-55
After one of the roughest crossings we had ever experienced we had some really hot, sunny and delightful weather in which to enjoy the fantastic scenery of the Norwegian fjords. Steaming almost directly due north up the North Sea in westerly gales does not make for the most auspicious of starts to a cruise holiday. Many passengers and, surprisingly, some experienced crew members had bouts of seasickness and all concerned breathed sighs of relief when we reached Bergen, our first port of call.

The weather for the first couple of days was mixed with long cloudy periods interspersed with some sunshine but on our last two port days in Olden and Eidfjord the sun shone for almost 24 hours per day from a faultlessly blue sky, the temperature rocketed into the mid 20's celsius, high 70's fahrenheit and everyone's sense of wellbeing was restored by the superb fjord scenery.

Entertainment on board Oriana was as usual excellent with guest lecturer Gervase Phinn being a particular favourite of ours. All in all an excellent cruise, our first to Norway. The major letdown for us was being assigned to second sitting dining despite our having been assured by our travel agent that we would be on first sitting. We ate in the desk buffet most nights although two dinners in the excellent speciality restaurant Oriana Rhodes, though pricey, went a long way to making up for our disappointment.
Quality of Food4
We ate mainly in the deck buffet and only once in the main restaurant. Oriana Rhodes was outstanding.
Entertainment5
Gervase Phinn was a particular favourite but all the Stadium Theatre Company production shows were excellent.
Shore Excursionsn/a
We never do the cruise line's shore excursions. We do our own thing.

Cabins3
Inside cabin was fine. It's just a place to sleep, shower and change.
