Cruise Reviews

the med in November

Cruise Line: Royal Caribbean Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Voyager of the Seas Sailed: November, 2008
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 56-65
Having left our decision to take this cruise to the last minute we were not sure what to expect regarding the weather in the mediterranean-cruises/">Mediterranean in November. Travelling on the Royal Caribbean Cruises Voyager of the Seas for the second time we were to be pleasantly surprised - the weather was warm and perfect. The Sea was so calm that you would not have noticed that you were moving or at sea for most of the trip! Having said that I would not like anyone interested in cruising for the first time to think that calm seas can be guaranteed anywhere / at any time! The ship is now about ten years old and is due to go in dry dock shortly but it is an amazing ship. If you are worried about travelling on large ships - don't be. The ice rink, climbing frames, theatre etc are there to enjoy. Organised trips we took to Florence and Rome were costly but I'm always afraid that travelling quite long distances to such venues from the port by train could mean not getting back to the ship on time and being left stranded. Other easier trips we did try successfully independently such as catching the ferry to the Isle of Capri from Naples. We then came across an organised group on top of the island-cruises-summer-holidays/">island and briefly tagged on the end to find a glorious view pointed out by the official guide - very noughty of us. The independent excursion cost about a third of the organised trip and I didn't feel concerned about getting back on time because we caught the same ferry as the organised group! Food was good though nothing special but as only my wife and I dined on our large table regularly the waiter was keen to offer us second helpings - which of course we refused! I think they just wanted something to do when traditionally I've usually found them rushed off their feet. Many people seem to want pie n chips in the self service these days but that's the beauty of cruising you decide what suits you. We did have problems with a noisey occupant in the cabin next door - one night the television was on all night - another he spent the night on his mobile phone. Mobile phones don't you just bless them - why can't people relax and forget about home - soon it will be "I'm on the plane." To be fair the the staff they were very helpful and eventually offered us another cabin which we took up. Not a great deal of fun packing everything up half way through a cruise but at least we got some sleep! I would recommend anyone avoiding at all cost a cabin which links with it's neighbouring cabin. The noise and light which came through the linking door was a nightmare - never again! Still overall it was great to get away in November and find such lovely weather - cold when we got back though. Highly recommend the ship and cruiseline - we've been on most cruiselines including some posh ones and this ship is just fine - just starting to look a bit tired (a bit like me). I missed my days at sea though as most days we were in port - but then I knew that before i went didn't I?

As an experienced voyager (Container Ships) but soon to be newcomer to cruising what warrented your one star only cabin rating please?

Answer by busby, burton on trent (02 Dec 08 10:42) to a QUESTION by Newton (29 Nov 08 09:36)
The cabin itself was fabulous - it had a balcony and everything you would ever need on a cruise and more e.g space, wonderfully comfortable bed (far better than our bed at home), fine linen, perfectly adjustable temperature, wardrobe space, comfortable seating area etc. We did, however, have a flood into the cabin area from the bathroom that happened when we were away from the cabin, which was dealt with admirably in our absence by the stewardess - but it was a pain to have the carpets dried out over 24 hours! The staff felt that this was just one of several signs of the ship needing a makeover. In truth there are many, many far older ships in service which are showing their age more than this one but generally I agree that the newer a ship is the more stable and comfortable it is - makes sense that it will be so though older ships do have their charm! The plumbing in the toilet packed up twice meaning that the toilet couldn't be flushed but again this was dealt with quickly. The real downside was the fact that as our cabin was allocated to us as part of the cruise purchase package with no choice on our part it turned out to have an adjoining door to the next cabin. We could have been lucky and had perfect neighbours but we weren't, so my score reflects my experience on this cruise of having a cabin with an adjoining internal (albeit locked) door, plus the flood and toilet problems. I suppose my low score reflected the impact of having this type of connecting arrangement and the effect of a noisey neighbour rather than the quality of the cabin itself.Would I go on this ship again - you bet I would. Kind regards. Paul
