The cruise we enjoyed in January was actually 2 cruises - one a 6 night and one an 8 night cruise, doing a figure of eight in the Caribbean. We booked the Jewel of the Seas, because we had previously sailed on the Radiance, her sister ship, and of the eight or so ships we had sailed on, she was our favourite, and the ports of call were mostly ones we had been to before and liked, and some were new to us completely.
We flew from the UK, and stayed a night in Ft Lauderdale, before joining the ship about lunchtime. Our cabins, balcony of course were well located and well furnighed. the ship had the same lay out as the Radiance, so e quickly settled in.
We were more than a little annoyed to find that we were sharing a table with two American families, we usually dine alone, but they proved to be good companions, and it was only for the first 6 days. The posts of call were Key West, good for bars and shopping, but not much else, Belize, an amazing barrier reef absolutely wondrful snorkelling, Cozumel, Playa del carmen. Royal caribbean do the best shore excursions for the adventurous and active, and our morning in P de C had us zip lining, snorkelling in caves, mountain biking and river tubing... great fun.
The ship was great, with a good gym and exercise programme, of course I had to try the climbing wall, and made it up to the top. the food was usual cruise fare, good enough, but not gourmet. The ships entertainment was a little disappointment, except for the pianist in the schooner bar who was brilliant. In the second half of the cruise we visited St Juan, St Thomas, St Maarten, Tortola, all old favourites, but many changes onshore. st Maarten was hardly recognisable!
In St Maarten, however, we did the Americas Cup Yacht race challenge, and it was without a doubt the best shore excursion I have ever done. We were actually racing in a retired Americas Cup Race Yacht, crewed by three professionals and us!! what a hoot. it was so exciting, fast and furious, I recommend it for anyone with a sense of adventure who is fit and well.
Royal Caribbean is a good line, organisation is good, and it gives good value for money. The staff are always motivated, and friendly. I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone who has seen quite a bit of the caribbean before, as we had, and just wants a relaxing holiday with a measure of fun and activity thrown in.
