Standards Slipping?

Reviewed By: Lawrence, Walton on the Naze on 27th Nov 2008
Cruise Line: Royal Caribbean Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Vision of the Seas Sailed: November, 2008
Destination: Mexico Age: 56-65
We have recently returned from a 7 day Mexican West Coast cruise on board Vision of the Seas. It was our 4th time on Royal Caribbean having now completed over 30 cruises in total. Our last time on RC was some eight years ago and it was very noticeable that cost savings had been made in the main dining room. It is now a strictly 3 course meal with a somewhat limited choice - no salad course or sorbet and cheese & biscuits was only available on request. However the plus side of this is that the meal was completed in around an hour whereas in the past it was not unusual for the service to take over 2 hours. It was a typical Royal Caribbean experience with an ultra extrovert Cruise Director who whipped up everybody for deck games, bingo and show games - however this was easily avoided. Our biggest disappointment was that the dress code was completely ignored by many of the guests ( Americans ) to such a degree that at least 2 people on the formal nights wore jeans tee shirts and trainers. We complained to the Maitre D but he showed little concern. One man in particular was really taking the Michael by wearing a tee shirt printed with a bow tie and dress shirt , together with three quarter trousers and trainers !! Overall the staff were excellent and could not have been more helpful and friendly.
The cruise was a tag on to 6 days in Vegas but we were pleasantly surprised at the ports of call - all very different and well worth a visit. We enjoyed the guest acts particularly the illustionist but were a little disappointed with the production shows. We only did one tour - the one in LA before our flight home - this was good and we had no problems with embarking or disembarking the ship.
The ship as you would expect has the wow factor with gleaming public rooms and a wonderful theatre. Overall an enjoyable cruise and very typical of Royal Caribbean with for me a little too much hype. Perhaps I am getting old or is it just because I appreciate higher standards but I must say that I much prefer cruising with Celebrity.
Quality of Food4
Ate in the Dining Room in the evenings. Good quality food but menu has been cut considerably. Buffets were very average.
Entertainment3
Most enjoyable - Kyle Knight & Mistie - Magician. Production Shows were only average.

Question by Vas, Bristol (08 Dec 08 10:33) about this REVIEW
We are going on holiday on the Vision of the Seas in January 2009. This mans comments have really upset me!! Why is it that guests are allowed in the dining room with the dress code completley ignored? There are rules and it clearly should not be broken. I am very annoyed that this is allowed to continue. Can you make sure that the dress code is strictly adhered to and not allow anyone into the restuarant otherwise? I would like an anwer please? This spoils the cruise as people like to at least look smart

Hi Vas Hope my comments didn't put you off too much - but you will see from reading another review posted around the same time that this is a problem on this ship. Our cruise was aimed at the short break ( 7 day ) younger market and lets face it the Americans particularly the younger ones do not like dressing up. We were a party of six and although we went to Vegas first we still took white tuxedos etc. The only thing I can suggest is that you contact customer services in the UK before you go with your concerns and ask them to contact the ships management to address the problem. You will see from the other comments I made that we really did enjoy the cruise on what is a beautiful ship - it was just a pity that standards are being allowed to slip just a little.

You have plenty of choice in the Caribbean at this time of year. Depends on what you want but from your comments would suspect that you would not enjoy a glitzy american ship. Would suggest P&O, Princess,Thomson, Ocean Village or Fred Olsen. Personally we did not like Fred Olsen ( too stuffy ). One big advantage of using one of these companies is that you fly direct to your embarkation port ( eg. Barbados) and once your luggage is checked in the UK the next time you will see it is outside your cabin on the ship. Same coming back - put luggage outside your cabin on the last night and next time you see it will be on the carousel in the UK.

Best to ask this question on the Cruise Answers section. Then you will get plenty of answers. It willl be useful to browse through the answers given in recent weeks to get some idea of some of the issues people raise and the responses. It certainly helped us and answered a number of questions we had.
