island escape faulty tower's at sea

Cruise Ship: The Island Escape Sailed: November, 2008
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 56-65
Having previously enjoyed our last 3 cruises on the island-cruises-summer-holidays/">island escape,we are left very saddend by our latest cruise the Venetian adventure. On arrival to our cabin (which is small but spotlessly clean) we discovered the air conditioning unit was not working, complained 5 times on each separate days guest relations (thats a big joke in itself) because they dont seem to take your complaint seriously! Eventually told our cabin temperature would be controlled from the boiler room!(unbeleivable) We also heard of a couple who had no hot water for the first five day's. We found that the quality of the food was not as good as the past cruises, and garlic appeared to be in everything including the garden peas, WHY? my wife has a reaction to garlic which brings on a asthma attack. Passengers are informed that it is not a problem for the chef to prepare something different for you. NOT SO. Head waiter said chef uses garlic in all his sauces, when asked if they could prepare an omelette, he quite abruptley replied sorry we have no eggs! (total rubbish) Captain Roberto did not appear to be attentive as previous captains, in fact we only saw him briefly twice in the two weeks and some passengers never saw him at all. Water came pouring in on deck three, where from we are not sure. some say the porthole windows! One of the engines failed, cutting short our stay at Messina, having to leave early, for the ride of a lifetime! Extremely rough seas, even crew members were sea sick. At no time did the captain use his stabilizers, (leading me to believe weve had your money hold on tight, it's going to be a bumpy ride) The crew and entertainment are excellent, and most did their very best, but we are very saddened that the standards on the escape appear to be at their lowest, and sadlly think its time to scrap what was once a wonderful ship!We will certainly not cruise on her again. I concur with the general comments made above. I shall never cruise with this company again. I have cruised with several companies and this was, by far, the worst. Food, staff and entertainment good to very good but cabins, the ship generally and excursions were poor to very poor. As for the Captain he, like the ship, needs to be permanently retired.

We also travelled on this ship for the same cruise. Whilst I agree with most of what Meller has said, I must point out that on all of the ship arranged excursions, it clearly stated on the information that a LOT of walking was involved. We did think that the ships excursions were 'pushed' though, and they gave no information out about cheaper options of travel or other costs like we had on a previous cruise. ( when asked about transport in Venice, the failed to mention the much cheaper option of a 'water bus' ticket, instead pushing the single trip, ship arranged shuttle, a much more expensive option). The Island escape is now looking 'tired', and the staff did an excellent job at making the best of a bad situation. I paid for 30 minutes on the internet to check emails, and spent most of my two sessions waiting for the system to connect to the website I was wanting (Yahoo Email). When a complaint was made about the connection speed the first time, I was advised it was because we were at sea. When I complained again, I was told it was because we were at port!! They did put an 'out of order' sign up for the rest of the day though. We found the food to be excellent, and I found plenty that did not have garlic in it, but to be honest, it didn't bother me as I like the stuff. I also thought that the Captain appeared uninterested, and most of the passengers had a laugh about his voice when he made announcements in a slow, monotone voice. I enjoyed the cruise, as did my Wife, but next time we will most likely look elsewhere. Steve Murtagh. Preston, Lancs UK.

The short Italian Captain on my weeks didn't seem as public minded as other captains mentioned in previous reviews. We all made fun of his lathargic monotone voice on the announcements that seemed to rattle on forever especially during the safety drill. When seeing him around the ship he never seemed approachable like the other staff and always looked miserable, he didn't even take part in the Officers show. The Internet was very slow whilst on board and the version of Internet Explorer was old so was uncompatible with a number of the sites I visited like facebook. Found I got a quicker response in dock using my mobile phone or I did hear that Cyber cafes at dock were also a cheap option. The Internet went down on a number occassions whilst both in port and at sea and when I questioned it the reception always gave a different response like interference from other ships or that they were too far away from land.... rubbish excuses...technology these days shouldn't be a problem at sea or near land. They couldn't even get half the satellite channels working. Whilst I was on board there was also a leak with apparently water running down pouring down the walls within cabins..this was on the 9th and 8th floor and from all accounts had something to do with a leak from the pool at around 3am in the morning. luckily i was towards the front of deck 8 and slept through it.
