My first cruise and I was looking forward to the holiday of a lifetime. What I got was a nightmare. We flew to SanFrancisco and boarded the ship. Apparently a cage containing luggage broke whilst being handled with a fork lift and several pieces were lost in the sea. All were fished out except mine, most were hand luggage but mine was my main case with All my clothes etc in it. frst they denied any luggage was lost and insisted on a cabin search for two days. Eventually after four days it was admitted that the case had been lost in the sea and was found after 3 days several miles down the coast. I was told that my belongings could not be returned to me until I returned to san Francisco where someone would help me to sort them out whilst I was staying there. It was an Alaskan cruise and because of lack of clothing and shoes I had to cancel the excursions that we had booked .To be able to go outside to see the glaciers I used a blanket to keep warm. the only clothes I had were the ones that I travelled in. Help on board consisted of a small pack of toiletries and the loan of a bath robe. In San Francisco I found that my suitcase had been rifled through some items were missing and the smell from it was horrendous. We stayed in a hotel with no laundry facilities so had to dry it the best I could, the help promised never materialised instead I was basically told tough If we had to pay out on every piece of luggage that got lost or damaged we would not get indemnity. Since then I've been in touch with Princess cruises and although I've had some out of pocket expenses they said that According to some convention I have to prove intentional neglect. this would mean employing a legal representative and legal expenses which I am not in a position to do. So now I have an empty wardrobe and nightmare memories of what was to be a beautiful holiday

This is dreadful! I am so sorry - it would have ruined my holiday too. It saddens me that cruise companies seem to do little to compensate at the time it's needed, i.e. on the cruise! All I can suggest is you write to the CEO of the company (abuckelew@princesscruises.com is the email address I just found on the website ceoemail.com) explaining the whole sorry saga, and say you feel you were not adequately treated (whilst on the cruise) or compensated. If you get a negative response, don't give up straight away - argue! If no joy there, then give this story as much publicity as possible to make the cruise lines think about doing the right thing in the future - it may give you some satisfaction too! Forgive me if you have already tried all this! Try not to let this put you off of cruising again - when things go right it really is a great way of taking a holiday.

Yes I had insurance cover but they claim it is Princess cruises that sould sort it out as it was their negligence that caused the problem!!!!!!!!!!!

In that case I would make an official complaint to the insurance company and Princess along the lines of Princess and you disagree- one of you must be wrong, recording the posting of the letters and giving them each 14 days to sort it. After 14 days I would pass everything to the Insurance Ombudsman. An alternative is to offer the case to a no win no fee solicitor who will delight in taking one side or the other to the cleaners. Many of these big companies rely on the fact that customers can't be bothered to pursue matters and give up - hang on in there.

What a complete nightmare this must have been for you. Although it is of no help for your cruise being spoilt, you could claim on your travel insurance for any items that were damaged or lost. Possibly, your home contents insurance if you have accidental damage cover away from home. I know it is little consolation, as this must have ruined your holiday, but you may get some money to replace the lost and damaged items. The attitude towards this from Princess is a complete disgrace. At the very least, they should have allowed you to choose some clothes from the shop on the ship to tide you over during the cruise.

I do have home contents insurance but it does not cover holiday travel and both Princess cruises and my travel company think the other should pay out

Our circumstances seem mild compared to yours, but generally speaking these cruise lines are a law unto themselves. One of our cases was destroyed by Cunard (QM2) and they insisted we claim through our insurance even though it was so obviously their fault. We wondered why so many people walked their own luggage off at New York!!! They offered to pay only the excess of £50. As regards writing to the CEO, what a joke. Everytime the reply came from the minion. They are only interested in taking our money and if they mess up they try to avoid the consequences.
