We had never been to the Caribbean before nor had we been on a cruise. It made sense, therefore, to combine the two for a special birthday celebration for my wife. After much research and deliberation a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean on board the Ruby Princess was the chosen one. We were not disappointed.
The Ruby Princess is a fabulous ship and our balcony cabin was a good size with plenty of storage room. Our steward introduced himself to us on our arrival and was extremely pleasant considering the long hours worked. Our cabin was serviced twice a day, the evening turn-down service being a nice touch.
We opted for anytime dining as this was less restrictive and we could have dinner early or late depending on how we felt. Most nights we chose to share a table with others and this was a great way to meet fellow passengers. There were only a couple of nights when we had to wait for a table, the longest wait being no more than about 20 minutes. Even then we were given a pager so we did not need to hang about. The food and service in the restaurants was first class.
We did not go to either of the formal nights and on those occasions we dined in the buffet where there was an extensive range of food from which to choose. It was pleasing to see the hand sanitizers located at the entrance to the self-service restaurants.
There was plenty to do on board the ship; music acts on deck and in lounges, shows in the theatre, Movies under the Stars where you could watch films in the open air from the comfort of a lounger, as well as numerous other activities. Despite the fact that there were over 3,100 passengers on board, it never felt really crowded and it was always possible to find a seat or a quiet spot.
As this was our first cruise, we decided to play safe and booked a number of shore excursions through the ship. Although most of these were enjoyable, they did tend to be on the expensive side for what you got. Our one exception was on Antigua where I had pre-booked over the internet with Scenic Tours Antigua on their Island Experience Tour. Initially it was only a few dollars less for a private tour in a taxi than the equivalent ship's excursion but we were fortunate in that by the time we arrived there another three couples had booked the same tour and we all went in a mini-bus at half of the original cost each. The tour itself was one of the best of our entire trip and we did not need to part with any money until the end of the tour back at the port.
Both the embarkation and disembarkation procedures were smooth and efficient and we were extremely impressed with the organisation and professionalism of Princess Line at these times and throughout our entire cruise. As first-time cruisers we cannot compare Princess with other cruise lines but we met many repeat customers on board and, for me, that speaks volumes. With that knowledge and our own experience, we would have no hesitation in recommending Princess Line and Ruby Princess in particular to others. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time on board what is in essence a floating 5-star hotel.
Quality of Food5
Da Vinci and Michelangelo restaurants for Anytime Dining; Horizon and Cafe Caribe for self-service. We did not pay extra for the speciality restaurants as it did not seem necessary with what was on offer at those where we dined.
Entertainment4
Did not go to all the shows but those we did see including the illusionists were very enjoyable.
Shore Excursions3
Scenic Train Journey on St Kitts was cancelled at last minute because of breakdown. As this was our first island that was particularly disappointing. Of the ship excursions we enjoyed the catamaran sail to the Pitons on St Lucia with bus on return journey and Atlantis Submarine Expedition at Barbados
Staff5
All staff were polite, considerate and helpful.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Plenty of optios for the fit and not so fit.
Cabins5
Cabin was comfortable, well laid out and spacious enough for us.
