Round the Med on the Ruby

Cruise Line: Princess Cruises Times cruised before: 3-5
Cruise Ship: Ruby Princess Sailed: May, 2009
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 56-65
Cabin: Balcony Occasion: Annual/regular holiday
Having cruised with Princess last year on the Grand to the Med we were keen to try Princess again and went for the Ruby at quite short notice. Flights out to Venice and transfer to the ship went smoothly enough however it was a pity that it took Princess over three hours to get our luggage from the quayside up to our cabin. From our balcony we could actually see our own cases with a distinctive band round them and despite going to customer services we still had to wait despite me offering to take the cases onboard myself but this was not acceptable. We wanted to get a shower and changed and head off into Venice for a while and in the end we freshened up and went without waiting any longer. Sailing out of Venice is really something else with the appropriate music being played over the ships tannoy system. The ship itself is excellent as any new ship should be however we thought our cabin felt slightly smaller than the one we had on the Grand even although it was the same grade. The shower was most certainly smaller. Decor etc was excellent and the bed comfortable.
The food was a bit of a mix, some days it was good on others it was poor particulaly in the self service buffet. One of the problems here was the red hot plates which did nothing for any salad material you put on it. We had anytime dining and in the main dining room the food was very good with a good mix on each nights menu although now and then some food was cold by the time it was put down in front of you even with the plates being hot. Most of the waiters/waitresses were good however there were others whose face would have cracked had they smiled. One of the best treats was the afternoon tea. Excellent!!!!
We only used the ships own excursions once and that was the "private" train chartered by the ship to take you into Rome. It was private except for the other cruise ships in port who had also chartered it. The carriage was absolutely cooking with hot air being pumped out at your feet and supposedely cool air coming from the air con. It was very cramped with adults having to swing their knees one way or the other to allow the person sitting opposite to get their knees the other way. Pity about the long wait in Rome for everyone to get onboard despite being told what time to be back at the station. Next time we will do our own thing and get the normal train service. $60 dollars to be cooked in a carriage for an hour is not funny and certainly not worth the cost. Avoid it at all costs. Other ports of call were good although some were a bit on the short side and certainly not getting into Athens (high winds)was a big disappointment. In Istanbul we used the courtesy bus into the city centre and as directed returned to the pick up point for going back on board however we stood for over two hours as the buses drove past us without stopping despite the ships rep standing beside us giving assurances that there were more buses coming only for them to do the same. Eventually they stopped some of the tour buses and squeezed people onto them. CHAOTIC.
Entertainment was a mix of broadway type shows, comedians jugglers opera singers etc. The Irish comedian should have been left on one of the many islands we sailed past but the juggler (saw him on the Grand last year)and American comedian were absolutely excellent. Only disappointment was that some of the shows were repeated on the next night and on the entertainment by the crew night the entertaiment team did exactly the same word for word as the crew on the Grand.
Some of the groups in the other lounges were also of excellent quality particularly in the Explorers lounge where the dancers who were competing in the Ballroom Blitz were a treat to watch every night. There is plenty of other entertainment to keep all tastes happy each day.
One of Princess's best kept secrets is their coffee card. Despite using the International cafe regularly with the adjacent coffee bar not at any time did a member of staff mention that you could purchase a coffee card to reduce the cost of each coffee. It was a fellow passenger who mentioned it one day while standing waiting to be served but by this time the cruise was almost over so not worth buying at such a late stage.
Disembarking became a bit of a fiasco also. After packing most of our luggage the night before docking we had a note delivered to our cabin to say that as our flight home was late in the day we were being taken into Barcelona for several hours before going on to the airport so some rearranging of clothes was necessary. After arriving at our meeting point at the stated time we had to sit for a further 40 minutes before being taken to our coach however we then had to sit on the coach for almost another hour waiting for one couple to appear so our time in Barcelona was somewhat curtailed. Once at the airport there was yet more problems - our tickets were for a British Airways flight to Heathrow so we were taken by Princess staff to the BA desks which were closed but we were assured they would soon be open. After waiting for some time we eventually went to the info centre only to be told that the flights were actually with Iberia and not BA despite the flight number being with BA.
One little point to watch is the cost of photographs. At $24.99 each they are twice the price of similar items on the Grand.
I suppose they have to recoup the cost of the new ship somehow.
On the whole we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves apart from the odd problem. We met some very interesting people and some not very intersting people over dinner but thats life I suppose.

Quality of Food3
Anytime dining was good but buffet could be better. International cafe is great for a snack.
Entertainment3
Least enjoyable was Irish "comedian" but the best was the American comedian and juggler
Shore Excursions1
Only used the Private train to Rome and wished we hadn't. Better to make your own way and a lot cheaper as it was in all the ports. Shuttle buses were expensive. Other cruise ships charge €1 for most journeys but Princess charge about $12
Staff3
Most were pleasant and helpful enough but they did not seem to have the same enthusiasm we saw on the Grand
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities3
Plent of options for all tastes. Movies under the stars is good if it is not too cold.
Cabins4
Cabin was very clean and tastefully decorated. Shower seem to be getting smaller.

Reference Photo prices. Sorry to say that it is not the Ruby charging more than the Grand. The prices on all their ships was increased sometime between May and July. I paid about US$45 for the two disc cruise DVD on the Ruby in May, But by the time I travelled on the Crown in July the price had been hiked to US$45 for EACH disc. Needless to say their take from me was greatly reduced, to NIL. However I would say that it is always worth going along at the very last moment and "doing a deal". I have done this on several occasions and managed to get some of the photographs at "rock bottom " prices, well about US$5 anyhow. I think that they, at that stage of the cruise, feel that any money is better than none!
Opinion: Disagree Comment by McDowell, Lubbock (01 Jul 09 02:45) about this REVIEW
Mr/Mrs McQueen, My family and I were on the exact cruise as you. I would agree with some of your review, but a great deal of it I disagree with. The Ruby Princess had 3600 passengers during that cruise, and the ship was completely booked. The fact that it took 3 hours to have your luggage delivered to your room shouldn't have been a surprise. Although you saw your luggage out of probably more than 8,000-10,000 peices of luggage, all cruise ship companies have a way to deal with it and cannot let a passenger retrieve the luggage. it's a systematic approach and must be handled that way to ensure everyone receives their luggage properly. Gathering your own luggage would have been a liability for Princess, and that is unacceptable for the cruise line. Three hours to wait for your luggage isn't too much to ask. For this particular cruise, we booked late and ended up with a normal stateroom. The room didn't feel any smaller than other ships. Unless you have a mini-suite or better, all bathrooms seem the same size (exception would be a handicap room). The shower in the mini-suite is actually a full size tub. I agree with you regarding the food. Sometimes the food is good, other times the food is average. The Horizon court is usually the place where the food can be hit or miss. Can't help you regarding the warm plates. Perhaps taking a plate to your table and letting it cool off before putting your salad material on it would have worked. I can understand your feeling about the bus that was chartered, but I doubt it was the cruise lines fault. The driver was most likely trying to save fuel or some crazy idea like that. Also, Europe is awefully hot this time of year. Once you exit the bus or walk around the cities, you are feeling totally exhausted. It's the weather; I guess you just have to deal with it. As far as Athen, Greece goes, I feel your pain. The wind wasn't the captains fault. You should have mentioned in your review that the captain idled in the water for several hours hoping that the winds would die down. They did their part-- Mother nature didn't cooperate. Entertainment: I've noticed for the last couple of years that the entertainment has progressively become worse. Entertainers cost a great deal of money, and I understand that Princess cruises needs to save money when times are tough. It doesn't help when Princess is already giving people a heck of a deal just to get on the ship. Some of the entertainment was lackluster, but some of it was extremely good. The Operal singer was incredible. By chance do you know her name? I'd appreciate that information. The Princess dancers were also great. The last show entitled something like "I had a dream" was exceptional. The way they made the background come to life is something totally new. In my opinion, it was the best show I've ever seen on a cruise ship. Shows were played multiple times because there were 3600 passengers on board. All the people cannot see the same show on the same night. Three nights for a repeated show would have been a bad thing. Two nights is acceptable. Also, don't forget that there are other equally talented shows (usually) playing at the same time. If you've seen a show on one night, just goto the other show on the next night. Problem solved. Coffee card? Hmm... I didn't know about that either Disembarkation can always be a mess. I don't think it was Princess' fault. I think it was the airport and the countries fault. My family and I were also distraught with that airport. We made it home. That's what mattered. We also flew Iberia, so I know how you felt about the airline. Photographs: Yes, they are expensive. Photographs on cruise ships are like Vegas and Slot machines. It's upto each individual to decide if it's worth it or not. I would rate (in stars) as follows: Quality of food ---> 4 stars Entertainment ----> 3 stars (Billy Vader and a few others should have stayed home) Shore excursions > 4 stars ( We spent $2,000 U.S..) You get what you pay for. Staff ----------------> 4 stars (The Maitre'D is the most friendliest guy I've ever met-- Generosa Masoni Childrens Faci. ----> N/a Cabins -------------> 4 stars (Get a mini-suite and life will be great). Overall rating -----> 4 stars. J. McDowell-- Texas

Hi Mr/Mrs McDowell. Thank you for your response to our review. Firstly the name of the opera singer was Annette Wardell and we agree she was very good. Now to respond to your other points. Regarding our luggage – we arrived at the ship at around 5pm and as we were about to board our luggage arrived on a trolley. When we got to our cabin we could see our cases from our balcony. There were only three trolleys containing luggage on the quayside and after about an hour there was only one trolley left (the one with our cases) and it took a further two hours for them to get to this shifted. On previous cruises we have found our cases virtually arriving in our cabin as soon as we did so yes we think this was pretty slow service. Cabin size – we were comparing what we had last year on the Grand Princess which was exactly the same grade as this one but somehow it did feel smaller(perhaps it was the very slight difference in layout that gave this impression). Don’t get us wrong we did not find any fault with the cabin it was just the feeling of being smaller. Athens was a disappointment and yes we hung around for a short period however we found out later that a couple of other cruise liners actually made it into harbour that same morning so why not us? Entertainment – we found most of the entertainment was very good and as you say there was the odd exception but it all boils down to personal taste. We were once again comparing with the Grand Princess last year where we were on a similar length cruise and the entertainment changed every night. There were no repeat performances as there was on the Ruby. The fiasco with the courtesy buses in Istanbul we believe was the fault of Princess as it is they who charter these buses and should ensure that they operate properly not leave it for individual drivers to stop wherever they wish. We paid €20 for the courtesy bus and as directed we were at the appointed place and at the correct time to be picked up only to see four empty buses drive straight past despite the Princess rep saying they would stop. Disembarkation – again we think Princess could have done more to get hold of the missing couple from our coach into Barcelona. All other passengers on the coach (total of 11) were at the appointed meeting place and had our names and flight numbers ticked off by staff who should have known two people were missing from the list. Could they not use the announcement system as they do when someone is missing as we leave ports. Our flight tickets were issued by Princess and made no mention that our flight was to be operated by Iberia. We were not alone with this problem as the other passengers on the same flight had no idea about Iberia operating this flight. At the airport we were taken by Princess staff to the British Airways check in desks and told they would be opening shortly however after waiting for a while we went to the information desk to enquire about the flight only to be informed to go to the Iberia desks to check in. Had we not gone to the info desk there was a chance we may have missed our flight because the BA desks never did open. Photos – why are they half the price on the Grand for the same photo? Surely Princess should have the same prices on all their fleet of ships. We are not anti Princess just some minor points that could really be improved with better organisational skills. We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise and the Ruby is a very impressive ship, hopefully we will sail with Princess again in the future but for our next trip we are trying Celebrity in September.

If you travel to Istanbul again on any cruise ship take the tram into the centre of the old city. Its five minutes from the ship, the journey takes ten minutes, it runs every five minutes and it does not suffer from getting caught in traffic jams, oh and it only costs about 60p Result lots of time for the important sightseeing.

Mr/Mrs McQueen, Thank you for your reply. The name of the opera singer is much appreciated. Please reply after you have sailed in September and let us know how it went. My family and I have only sailed with Princess (10 cruises now) and would like to know how the other cruise lines operate. Best regards.

Interested to read your review on your cruise - we are doing the same trip in September and funnily enough our last cruise was on the Grand in the Med so will naturally be comparing ships. Noted your comments re the food and entertainment but concerned re the excursion to Rome - we are doing the 'Rome on our Own' and hopefully this does not include that dreadful train journey. Would certainly will be interested in the Coffee Card so thanks for that advice and I am sure we will be paying a visit to the International Cafe. Glad you enjoyed your cruise despite the odd problems which hopefully will be sorted out by September!! Liz.

Hi Liz Re excursion "Rome on your Own" there is also a bus excursion with the same title so it may not be the chartered train. I understand that it is fairly easy to get to Rome by normal train service and at a very reduced cost compared to the ships fares. We did Florence/Pisa on our own by bus/train and the cost for both of us was around €25. One thing to remember if you do use the trains and buses to validate your tickets. You will see little yellow machines dotted around the station and on the bus which will stamp your ticket when inserted. Beware pickpockets operating on the trains coming out of Florence!!!! After being on the Grand you will notice shuttle buses and photographs in particular are twice the price on the Ruby. Enjoy your cruise particularly if you sail out of Venice - Stunning!!!! We are also going back to the Med in September but this time with Celebrity to see what they are like. Watch for reviews. Bob & Wendy McQueen

No problem with the train when we used it. The air conditioning worked and those that took the coach option ended up snarled in the Rome traffic and arrived one hour later and then left Rome one hour earlier.

Thank you for your comments re the trips - we are doing Princess excursion 'Easy Florence' but note your comments re validating the tickets which we will probably have to do when we use the buses/Metro in Florence and Rome when we do our own thing. Reading the recent reviews of Ruby Princess I have realised that we are now being charged for the shuttle buses (last cruise 2005 when the only shuttle bus necessary was free) and the photographs very expensive. We are sailing out of Venice which I just love - 3rd time. Enjoy your trip in September with Celebrity - I'll look for your review - we only cruise every 4-5 years and a bit wary of going with other companies when we like Princess so much so will be interested to hear your views on Celebrity for maybe our next cruise in 2013/14 !!! Enjoy Liz.
