Small cruise ships can sail right up the Saigon River to a berth at Ben Nha Rong, just a short walk from the city centre. ..... but when we were there last month on mv Discovery, we had to squeeze under a new (6 months old?) bridge over the Saigon River just south of the city. Discovery is 20,000 tons compared to Ocean Princess' 30,000 tons - so the bridge may be responsible, as I'm sure it will be for other ships. Or mebbe your ship, althou hardly a leviathon, is just that bit too large for the Saigon River anyway. .... I had the devil's own job trying to find out where we'd berth, as you've discovered it makes a huge difference. ........... Da Nang, like Costa we berthed at Nui Son Tra, adjacent Da Nang - luck of the draw I guess, two into one doesn't go. Da Nang has little to offer, & we had a great day motoring down to Hoi An plus Marble Mountain. But Chan May is way more convenient to Hue, I think if we'd berthed there that's we'd have headed ........... fascinating country, though, wherever you go. ......... regards, Chris.

Sorry about delay in replying - have been away. The actual vessel is fine - smaller than other Princess ships but more personal. The balcony cabins are similar to Sea Princess, the balcony is probably a touch deeper and not so closed-in. The cabin is very tasteful and comfortable though not over large. We actually had a meeting with a senior officer on board with regard to our complaints/ comments but it was quite obvious that everything is decided back at head office. We have been on a number of Princess Cruises and we realised before we left that entertainment was not their strong point. 3 shows in two weeks is poor.

Who did you use for arranging private tours rather than the princess ones? We are doing the same trip in November of this year. John Moore.

Apologies for delay. The best general website is www.toursbylocals.com. They have local independent guides all over the world and the ones we used were excellent. In Bangkok we would recommend Chawanwit Kupdhabhorn (Kim) ( kgym_chawan@hotmail.com) he was superb - very friendly, very knowledgeable and a true gentleman. Hopefully the 'troubles' in Bangkok will have been resolved by November - it is quite a place.

Thanks for the info re. Bangkok. Did you use any other independent guides in other places? if yes who were they?

Used Tours by locals for all other visits except Singapore which we 'did' ourselves - very easy, Metro at port right into centre and walk round and Shanghai where we stayed for 2 nights. There are several tours of the city on the various websites. Enjoy the trip.

We took mainly US $ - most of the Far East will snatch your hand off. We did, however, take some Chinese and Thai currency given that we were embarking / disembarking and wanted 'ready' cash. Enjoy the trip.
