Visiting mediterranean cities

The ship was very comfortable and well presented, and clean.
Food was mediocre during the day, plenty of it but it was not very appetising.Quantity rather than quality "All you can eat mentality" with a lot left on plates.mainly frozen food used which they seem to thrive on rather than taking on fresh items local to the country you are visiting.
Breakfast fried eggs were precooked and left out so that they had unpleasant 'skins' on.
Large buffet style meals, tea and coffee pretty revolting ,unless paying extra for freshly brewed coffee.
Dinner which was free seating was the best meal, service was good.Pizza and burger bars good if you enjoy that sort of meal.
Some excellent films were shown on board.
Tours were excellent good value for money and the onboard commentary coming in to each Port was excellent and informative .
They wanted us off the ship just after 8 a.m in the morning, when the cruise ended.
We had been assured several times by Princess Cruise office, before we signed up for the Cruise that we would be able to stay until late afternoon, as the only flight they could get for us was after 10 p.m on the same day.
This meant a whole day of sitting in an airport as there was nowhere for us to leave our baggage, as it was a small airport in Venice lacking facilities. We therefore had a whole day at the Airport, if we had known we would not have booked this Cruise.
This actually ruined the whole trip.Passengers should always be made aware of this as when the ship docks the staff want you gone!
The Staff on board the ship could not have cared less, and the Princess Head office had given us contradicting information for which noone would take responsibility. This was pretty appalling for a large cruise line.Passengers beware.Get something in writing before you sail!
When trying to contact senior personnel on this ship to complain it is impossible.A few passengers lost their luggage for the whole cruise and Princess Staff again did very little for them! Their PR department was dreadful, uncaring and disinterested in problems, and senior staff hiding away leaving very junior staff to deal face to face situations.
There were at several people left in this situation as they had made a mess of the return flight bookings.

Regarding the food: apparently concerns about the dropping standards of food quality are generally growing, but may I dare to ask of how it would be possible to buy on limited local food markets the quantities needed to feed some 2600 passengers and a 1000 or something of the crew daily? Should they go fishing in the Mediterranean in order to present fresh fish to their guests for dinner? After all, the cruise market has become a mass market for the middle classes and and this requires mostly preprepared food in large quantities, i.e. frozen, convenient products etc. To me, this seems to be fair, since, most people pay reasonable, sometimes even moderate fares, and it is just their problem that they nevertheless expect to play up a high end life which they most likely would not do so normally. Ths is why I never would go for food on a ship - this seems to be unreasonable for me, since products can't be fresh. Instead, I'm prepared to spend some money ashore for dining, and I have had some of my most beautiful holiday experiences in small local restaurants offering an individual style of cooking. Out of the very same reason that cruising has become a mass market, I respect the request to disembark early. Changing linens, cleaning etc. after some 2600 people left the ship and in the very same moment preparing for the next 2600 arriving just some hours later is no small job and requires all efforts of the crew. Since I have the deepest respect for their hard work I would not wish to stand in their way. In addition, I'm free to plan my own tours prior of flying back, and Venice is a very good point in case. The cruise harbour is located just opposite to the main station, where one could leave the luggage and head to the airports at Treviso or Marco Polo easily by bus, taxi or train . Touring Venice with Carta Venezia is also convenient. Sorry to say, but some people could get disenchanted because of their dreams incompatible with todays cruising.

Unfortunate you were told you could stay on board, it is extrenely rare for this to happen and nornally only if the line is using charter flights so there is a clean turnover of pax, in 9 years working for Princess I never once saw pax being allowed to stay on board after normal disembark time, logically it would be a nightmare for crew, immigration etc etc.

Did this cruise twice in 2007 and 2009 ending in Venice. On both ocassions just dumped at the airport with long waits ruining a good holiday. On the last trip an option was introduced for some £100 per person for a premium fast track departure and wait in executive lounge. Another insult after forking out in excess of £4000 for a trip. Princess lets down its offerring with poor air support. They just fall back on airline standards such as a 23kg luggage allowance. Nowhere enough for a cruise. Why can't they get a concession off an airline for better allowance for passing their business to them. Have cruised for 15 years, all with princess, and have seen standards drop as it has dumbed down over the years. Trying P&O this year out of Southampton and other lines in the future.
