We had a pre cruise 2 night stay at the Intercontinental Hotel, Sydney.
We thoroughly enjoyed Sydney; the weather was warm and sunny, the ambience along the harbourside was so relaxed, the Botanical Gardens were exceptional and the whole city was delightful.

We found the embarkation very smooth and soon we were in Horizon Court having lunch.

We chose an inside cabin as the holiday was already expensive and it was a way to save money. However, we were not disappointed as the cabin was everything it should be and well set out.

We chose Freedom Dining and used all the restaurants. The food was excellent at evening meal and with the very occasional exception the waiters were very friendly and attentive.

Breakfasts and lunches we took mostly in the International Dining Room and these, especially breakfasts, were of a high standard. Occasionally we used the Horizon Court which was all right but not as good as the main restaurant.

We used many of the bars and found the service mixed. Some of the waiting staff were efficient and friendly, but a small minority took a long time toserve us and were a little taciturn. What puts American ships at a dis advantage for passengers is the 15% gratuity added to each drink and the drinks anyway were not the cheapest.

The evening entertainment was typical of an American ship; some of the acts, notably the instrumentalist/vocalist and magician, were brilliant but the ship's dancing and singing troupe not so good. As for the comedian just not funny and when he tried to earn a laugh at the expense of Costa Concordia we left.

As on all American ships there is a constant wish to take your money - art auctions , wine tastings etc. Also, when will Cruise lines realise that they will sell 10 times as many photos if they charge a reasonable price.

I am not really moaning about the Cruise for it was marvellous, We visited Melbourne, Hobart, Milford Sound, Akoroa from where we visited Christchurch, Dunedin and Tauranga. With such visits how could you not enjoy it!
We did not use the much overpriced ship excursions but travelled independently, sometimes using local coaches, trams etc. I think Akoroa was the most picturesque port visited and the trip by local coach to Christchurch the most worthwhile. You cannot imagine the damage caused by the earthquake.

The disembarkation at Aukland seemed smooth at first but once on the harbourside there was chaos. Buses everywhere, disorganised " queues, but eventually we werwe on the right bus for the airport and the very very long journey home.

A wonderful cruise and holiday.
