Cruise Line: Princess Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Emerald Princess Sailed: February, 2012
Destination: Caribbean Age: 65+
Cabin: Balcony
Pre cruise
We flew from Edinburgh to Miami took a long time clearly immigration at airport then took a cab to Fort Lauderdale this cost $80. We stayed three nights at the Hilton Marine lovely hotel we booked bed and breakfast but they also do a cruise package which included transfer to ship, we took a cab and it cost $10 with tip.

Cruise
Cabin: Balcony
Emerald Princess Lauderdale to Fort Lauderdale Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean sailing 17th January 2012, 20-night cruise.

This was a back to back cruise and it was announced that 360 passengers from the previous cruise were on a back to back.
Grand Princess Passengers are USA, Canada with English Welsh and Scots and was full.

Back to back need to know:
I contacted Princess Southampton October 2011 and asked Back to back cruise – FULL details of what will happen/not happen, Princess were unable to reply, that is have failed to tell us anything!
So what variations are there?
1. Docking at Fort Lauderdale half way through was unknown until 16:00 day before docking.
The only information we gleaned in the UK was that we would need to go through immigration, no mention of times / going to lounges etc. thus loss of holiday day.
No mention of ship facilities being closed on transit day that is EVERYTHING from 09:00 to 12:00 except the International Café.
And if passengers have same surname and one wants to go ashore and the other stay on board the person returning to the ship may be held on shore for a long time until the ship is signed off as empty by immigration. On our cruise we now of someone who had to wait one and a half hours!
The letter we received the day before could have should have been issued at time of booking.
On transit morning breakfast no room service, and times brought forward and places CLOSED by 09:00
What happened is one has two choices, go ashore before time set in our case 09:00 show old cruise card, new cruise card and transit card, walk through terminal go through immigration. Alternative is to go to lounge at set time be escorted of ship go through immigration and return on board.
2. A note if you are on a special diet there will be no food available! Every place shut except International Café!
3. Menus, DO not change
4. The daily ship news letter The Patter details almost a snap of day1!
5. Shows activities vary every so slightly, virtually DO not change
6. At traditional dining seated with passengers on 10 day cruise, so different persons on second part of cruise.
7. Billings will it is at end.
8. Cruise card is per cruise one gets new card day before.
9. Coffee card is only valid per cruise had to waste time investigating and getting endorsed.
Safety
The pre sailing lift boat drill has been amended
The ships crew carried out a full emergency drill which started at 09:15 finished about 11:00 for effect to passengers but we heard PA re drills etc till mid afternoon.

The menus were the traditional Princess experiences, NO lunch in restaurant on most port days. Traditional dining was at 15:30, 18:00 and 20:15, with anytime dining plus speciality dining. There were two formal nights per section thus four, dress code less formal and dinner suit, with a few suits, jacket and tie.
Gluten free food – unlike previous cruises we were NOT contacted Princess before sailing, however we discussed the GF requirements with the headwaiter. Great service and assistance.
Generally we ate in the dining room and great GF food and selection. We went to Sabatini’s and the meal and service was excellent well worth the extra money but make sure you are hungry!

Good library, quiz were (available from the Library). There was limited ScholarShip at Sea enrichment lectures etc. There was one at 09.00 with the bridge one at a sensible time!

The entertainment was disappointing in theatre was production shows mixed with comedian and an illusionist in other areas of ships karaoke/quiz on often not what we had experienced before, where was the singers etc? And a lot of repeats.

There were not Port talks, one needed to have already done homework or watch excursions details in TV. There were always local taxis at each port.

The ports of call and excursions:

Princess Cays, Bahamas –
We had trouble finding out about Princess Cays which basically is a Princess leased beech. Princess describes it as, “where you'll enjoy a private beach party on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. One hundred miles long and only two miles wide, Eleuthera offers unspoiled beaches. Our private resort at Princess Cays is situated on more than 40 acres and features over a half-mile of white-sand shoreline, all at the southern tip of the island. Take in the views from the observation tower. Enjoy a barbecue. Sip a cool drink or browse the shops and the local craft market.”
Disembarkation – Ship tendered
Excursion – we did a self walk lazed the day away. So we went ashore and had vitamin D and did a walk. Nice beach resort 3000 sun beds BBQ lunch lots of fresh fruit and we both paddled!
Weather sun and hot

Clock change -We are 4 hours behind UK.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands –

Disembarkation – Ship docked shops adjacent and main town 30 minute walk or $4 taxi ride per person.
Excursion - St. Peter Great House and Gardens & Mountain Top interested circular tour island but Great House is a grand restaurant function building!
Up hill down hill around corner bus never could get past 25mph! What views.
Weather sun and hot

Dominica
Excursion – Rainforest Aerial Tram & National Park great getting there by travelling up/down steep narrow, winding roads.
Weather sun and hot but cooler up the mountain

Grenada
Excursion we went ashore a short walk into St George it was a Sunday most shops closed but not at the pier mall plus we were only in port 07:00 – 14:00.
Weather rain with dry hot sticky periods.

Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands
Excursion we went ashore a short walk into town a very short walk we were only in port 12:00 – 19:00 some hops closed for lunch and reopened at 14:00. Weather hot with sun and showers.

Aruba
Excursion we went ashore a short walk into town very nice.
Weather had a shower while we had a beer and it was hot.

Then back to Fort Lauderdale two days at sea getting there. We went ashore prior to 09:00 and walked to from the beach lovely walk in the sun.

We did not pick up that the sequence of ports order for next section had changed as the Princess letter highlight the new sailing time change of flight time at the end just a few words about sequence.

Princess Cays, Bahamas
Excursion we went ashore and walked along the beach.
Weather sunny with a slight breeze, great. Next a day at sea with good weather.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Excursion we went ashore a short walk into town about 30 minutes slow walk very nice town. Weather sunny.

Antigua, Antigua & Barbuda
Excursion we went ashore a short walk into town walked up to St Johns which is being restored great view. Weather sunny downpour prior to arrival and shower as we left.
After sailing Captain carried out tests to see how fast ship could stop start!

St. Lucia
Excursion we went ashore a short walk around bat to other shops ordered a drink and heavens opened up! Lasted a few minutes then back to sun.
P&O Azure was in port and it carried out full drill of launching all port lifeboats.
Yellow alert status for the dreaded tummy bug!

Barbados
Excursion we went ashore on an excursion to Gun Hill Signal, Orchid Farm and Sunbury Plantation very good. Weather hot some clouds and a bit of drizzle.

St. Kitts, St. Kitts & Nevis
Excursion we went on a ships excursion to Brimstone Hill, Romney Manor & Caribelle Batk. We were in a “taxi” 12 person Clementine was driver/guide absolutely fantastic guy. The Batk was mobbed and all sales pitch demo was a fast “talk” waste of money this part, rest fantastic.
Weather sunny dry hot!

Upon return to Fort Lauderdale we noted that there were disembarkation excursions from the ship, Everglades Airboat Ride & Eco-Adventure with Miami Airport from $59.00. Or,
Everglades Airboat Ride & Flamingo Gardens with Miami Airport Transfer
from $79.00* This tour can be booked onboard only and is for passengers with flights leaving Miami International Airport after 4:00 pm. Wildlife sightings, while common, are not guaranteed.
Quality of Food1
Quality of Food Great food, some exciting choices. But after the first 10 day cruise menus do NOT change not what one pays full price for!
Entertainment1
Entertainment – extremely disappointing plus after the first 10 day cruise do NOT change i.e. repeats!
Shore Excursions1
Shore Excursions was disappointing, getting of the ship was fast and efficient. Port excursions Barbados great BGI 100A Dominica DOM350 the PA on coach was non operational we heard nothing! St Thomas STT100 the Great House was just a conference facility/restaurant a joke 30 mins insufficient time to walk see Botanics St Kitts SKB 1OOA Clementine Taxi TA 45 was the best ever guide/driver. The Batk was just a sales stop over crowded no demonstration. A total wasted stop! So 3 out 4 excursions failed.
Staff1
Staff Head Waiter Danielle , waiter Mary Anne, assistant waiter Jackson and Yoosu Stateroom steward, all fantastic as was the ships staff and crew.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities2
Cabins2
Meet Princess standards

I said I would update the back to back and we are now in receipt of a letter from Princess. Cruise forums statement about cruise reviews is “Please bear in mind that these are people's individual opinions, so try not to be put off a particular ship after reading just ONE bad review, because, as the saying goes, “one man's trash, is another man's treasure”! What had Princess to say about the repeats when we returned? They have stated “it is most regrettable you were unaware that your cruise was made up of two separate voyages” They stated “I (the UK customer service manager) have made our marketing and commercial teams aware of this so that notice can be given to passengers in the future”. The key points Princess ships are great we have been on many. The Emerald Princess is a superb ship the Hotel staff was the best we ever have had!. The knowledge of what could happen on back to back cruise now has posts on the web to the betterment of fellow cruisers and one can decide what they wish to book with better knowledge. I posted on the web our individual views, it is our view and NOT whinging. I believe that there is considerable confusion out there so some comments re the posted replies. Constructive comments yes, questions yes but please can posts have accurate facts! From the posted replies there seams to be some confusion so I will add: How to travel from UK to Fort Lauderdale The main carriers BA & Virgin both fly to Miami, thus a taxi or yellow bus to Fort Lauderdale, on way or the other one has to get to the ship at least the day before. Have we done long cruises with Princess? Yes 31, 30, 20, 19, 14 and done a back to back without the diet entertainment comment. How did we book this cruise? It was stated in the UK princess 20 day cruise. Did Princess Brochure state anything about repeats? No. It may well say differently in other countries brochures! Did we do anything to clarify what a back to back meant? Yes we wrote Princess October 2011 and asked and they Princess at Southampton never answered before we sailed despite us chasing for details! Dining As stated in the review we required one gluten free menu, this is something Princess accommodate well. This is normally is dishes from the menu cooked differently. Being GF is not easy as straight away the choice on the menu is reduced and selecting from a repeated menu is NOT fun!

From Miami airport you "took a cab to Fort Lauderdale this cost $80" In January at MIA we used the Super Shuttle up to Fort Lauderdale, Cost $62 for the two of us in the evening. Less traffic very fast journey. The little kiosk is outside MIA arrivals on the right, just go buy a ticket they have blue uniforms. Easy, we would use them again.

Although the menus may technically be the same, the fact that there are always umpteen choices, almost makes 'same' irrelevant. And if you particularly enjoyed a meal, there's the pleasure of having it again; if not you have something else. For me, it's win-win.

my son and I went on a 16day cruise round the ports as you and we really enjoyed it even the ship and crew were brilliant, I know the shows are repeats but there were things we didn't do one the first week that we did on the second could you not have done the same - dot lancs

I can't believe al the whinging in the review. I would ask first of all why you did not fly into a US gateway airport and then fly on to Fort Lauderdale, thus avoiding the horrendous immigration at Miami (much easier and quicker at other US Gateways) and stay in a Fort Lauderdale hotel that provided an airport and cruise shuttle. It quite clearly states in the brochures that if you book a back to back cruise, then menus and entertainment are repeated. If you had queries which were not addressed by Princess, why did you not use this site to aske questions. I still cannot believe that if you have done 10 cruises that you could not have done some research beforehand. Even where you quote that the ships facilities were not available on transit day between 9 and 12 noon could have been ascertained beforehand. Who stays on board on turnaround days anyway if you are on a back to back? I always try to get off as early as possible on these days. You could also have found out from other cruisers on this site that you can do your own excursions in the Caribbean much cheaper than the ship's own.

No doubt there would be other issues relating to Thomson which would not rate well in comparison to Princess but on reading this there are two areas which are clearly better for the passenger. If you do a b-2-b with them, there is a complete 14-day programme of shows and cabarets so passengers aren't subjected to repeats. Also, the change-over day is very slick and presents no problems whatsoever for passengers who are doing a b-2-b. Your ship's card is valid until your departure day (i.e. 14 days - only needs their computers to be programmed to recognise b-2-b passengers) so you get off as and when you like on your middle day as you would on any other port day. The restaurants are all functioning as usual so it seems it can be done for the passengers' convenience - if there is the will to do it.
Comment by Waddell, Cochrane (10 Feb 12 23:39) about this REVIEW
I get tired of people complaining aboutthe fact that menus and entertainment are virtually identical on both legs of a back to back cruise. What do you expect realistically? If you want a 14 day cruise or a 20 day cruise with different menus and entertainment etc. then go on a 14 or 20 day cruise. John Waddell, Canada
Comment by Rodgerson, Hamilton (18 Feb 12 11:29) about a COMMENT by Waddell (10 Feb 12 23:39)
The comment about going on a 14 day cruise is fair enough cruise we just did was sold to us as a 14 day cruise, no mention of back to back which is what it was.
Comment by willis, Rushden (09 Feb 12 21:19) about this REVIEW
i have just been on this exact same cruise the same dates as yourself and i must admit i totally disagree (slight exceptions!). this is my third cruise in 4 years with princess (the second of which i got married onboard by the captain at sea day). i have been really impressed with princes however i do feel that prices have increased rapidly with drinks, excursions, and spa treatments. the back to back issue i was totally aware of returning to fort lauderdale and the only issue was having to leave the ship for about 2 hours whilst the ship was cleared for security reasons. the food was repetative however the selection was more than enough to ignore the repeats and choose something else to enjoy ! the professional photos are expensive (ranging from $19.99 - $44.99 each). a pint of Stella is $7.62 (including the 15% service charge added to all drinks!). an average bottle of wine is $27 upwards. i will cruise with princess again however i will compare other companies before booking
