A couple of months late but have only just found this site ( Checking up on our next cruise with Princess ) This was our first cruise with Princess , having been with Cunard before. However as an ex seafarer I am no stranger to the sea - or ships !!
Flight BA to Vancouver from Terminal 5., upgraded to World traveller plus. A very smooth, organised flight. On arrival at Vancouver met by Princess rep and the usual 20 minutes ++ Delay awaiting the inevitable straggler. Off to the Westin Bayshore for 1 night. Couldn't believe the room overlooking the water with balcony and 2 huge windows. What a room and what a start to a holiday - Txs Princess.
Embarkation was a drag as we went through US cusoms and over an hours wait. The princess reps were getting all non US citizens to write out green cards as a variety of places for entry into States were used on peoples ESTA's. We used the first port - Ketchikan. Who would have thought Vancouver was to be used. In the end the immigration official never bothered !! What a waste of time and paper.
Had a balcony cabin that was very clean and spacious. Thought the bathroom was a bit tiny though
Food was very good in the main restuarant. Used freedom dining and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of meeting various people. Majority were US and occasionally experienced problems i.e. Gum chewing, baseball hat, jeans and loud - on the same table.
Buffet food was fairly good and never experienced a problem getting seats for breakfast or lunch.
Entertainment was good on the whole not top notch but adequate I would say. Port lectures were rather poor and mainly a sales pitch for the shops. Never used the internet but heard it was slow / unavailable a lot of time.
No problems getting a lounger - Not suprising as cool most of time. However plenty of space on top decks for glacier watching. Amazing how few people were around but ship was full !! The running commentry by rangers was superb as was their approachability on deck.
Apart from Skagway we did our own thing in Ketchikan and Juneau. The tour prices are horrendously expensive ( Probably due to low exchange rate of 1.40 ) THe one thing common to all the ports is the over commercialisation regarding the shops. Get past this and the place is a joy to behold. Plus we were very lucky with the weather having little rain and glorious sunshine on Glacier Bay cruising day
Ketchikan we walked around and found the boardwalk interesting. The shop selling all items gold on this boardwalk is truly amazing. Went up the cable car, visited the salmon hatchery and had a good day
Juneau we walked around, took the cable car in the afternoon when the low cloud had disappeared and took the bus to the glacier. All very interesting and had lunch at the truly amazing crab shack. Loads of bald eagles around
Skagway - Took our only ship tour with the train up past the old miners route and a bus back. Nice lunch at the oldest joint in town plus gold panning and gold dredge tour. First naff and second brilliant. After the tour we went to the small museum that was interesting.
Glacier Bay cruising - Highlight of trip with plenty of marine life - whales, sea otters, seals, etc. To see and hear glaciers " calving " was what we came for.
College Bay cruising - Was rather a disappointment as much further away from glaciers and couldn't make much out - but plenty of marine life again and good commentry from the rangers.
Whittier - Pouring with rain but we were starting a Princess land tour and so it was straight onto a train.

The land tour is another story but well worth it and we finished off with 3 days B & B in Seattle which was very enjoyable.

Overall a very interesting, worthwhile cruise. Only slight nark is the amount of paperwork we seemed to have to fill out at every corner - suprising in this computer dominated society

In conclusion I would definately recommend this cruise and we would not have missed it for anything. Would we sail Princess again - Already booked up for the Caribbean in March 2011 so that says it all

Question by Chaple, Worthing (02 Sep 10 20:40) about this REVIEW
Thanks for posting this review. We are not long back from our first Princess cruise, and are thinking about doing this trip next year. How was the land tour? We're not sure whether to book a land tour through Princess or do our own thing. Toying with renting an RV in Alaska. We don't like being packaged, but I do like the idea of the Princess train to Denali. Also, when did you book? Prices right now are astronomical, and we were thinking of leaving it till January.

Hi, There were a few hiccups on the land tour which I will explain but please do not let this detract. We did the princess 6 day land tour and can definately recommenmd it. Alaska highways train to Mckinley lodge( Not as nice as Princess train cars ). Nice room, adequate food and we saw the mountain late on first day and in all its glory on 2nd day - awesome. Did the jet boat to the rapids. V. expensive but well worth it. Booked it in Talkeetna but same price as Princess but we wanted breakfast at Talkeetna roadhouse - some superb pancakes. Talkeetna is where you get off the train and its an hours transfer to lodge but you can spend some time in the small place. Check out the airfield - different. Also an ethnic souvenir shop just opened. Turn left when you get off the bus and well worth a visit. Trip to Denali by coach was O.K. Upgraded our free tour to full tour of park and saw some great wildlife ( well worth the $50 each ) Room was good , overlooking the river. Went rafting on the river and had a great morning. Book in the shop over the road -after 1800hrs sell off trips even cheaper - if space left. Only hang up at Denali was the 1530 departure - after having to clear room by 1100hrs. Princess train to Fairbanks was great with some lovely views. Fairbanks Lodge by 2100hrs so rather late. Next day did the second freetrip on SternWheeler. Another excellent tour. Flight on next day to Seattle was 0600hrs to Anchorage and change for Seattle but did pass Mt Mckinley close and saw the peaks - Again awesome !! Drawbacks - Some confusion over the free trips. The brochure intimated it but Princess U.K. said not so. Tried to book land tours in U.K. but confusion reigned supreme as it did when we got to Mckinley lodge. THere were 2 free trips included in the package. Did not detract from the tours which were wonderful - Less than 36hrs in Fairbanks which equated to one day really - Early flight from Fairbanks to Seattle with a change. Not necessary as we had no onward connection from Seattle. - On Alaska Airways its $20 for each bag when leaving Fairbanks - I missed this in small print On the plus side - The Princess way of looking after luggage was great and went without a hitch. We liked the lodges at Denali & McKinley. Good views and large rooms. A letter to Princess outlining complaints was answered after 3 weeks in good detail with $200 credit - Well done to Princess. We booked in Sept 09 for June 10 and got the last cruise before prices went up for the high season. Prices in Alaska are high anyway, pound is low but the experience was magic. The 3 days in Seattle were very good as well. Hope this helps. I cannot emphasise enough what a magical trip it was ( and I'm a seasoned traveller ) You just have to do it.

Having done Alaska in 2008, we started with the land tour, progressed to the cruise and finished with three days in Vancouver. The land tour was absolutely awesome. Incidentally we are embarking on our 5th Princess cruise on 29th December. Every year we get all the cruise brochures and compare everything and evey year we come back to Princess. Need I say more
