Although Grand Princess isn't a sparkling new ship it still has a lot to offer. A balcony cabin on Caribe deck offers a good opportunity to escape from the crowds sunbathing on deck - there is shade from the cabins above so the sun wasn't too hot most of the time. As a fairly large ship there is usually a choice of entertainment and food and the ship is well maintained.
The balcony cabin was very comfortable rather than luxurious but the beds were fine and we had no problems with noise. The bathroom is small but functional - a minor niggle is the lack of shower gel (I took my own).
The 14 night Mediterranean Medley Cruise in July went smoothly and was very enjoyable. There was a largely British clientele and lots of kids - but only to be expected in July holidays so not a major problem.
The weather was very good most of the time and all the ports were interesting. Rome, Florence and Barcelona were the highlights - having been to Barcelona before I was surprised by the level of warnings about pickpockets - well founded it seemed as there were reports of incidents.
The food on Princess was as good as usual - I find the choices, variety, and the general standard of food better than P&O, NCL and Cunard (Brittania Class). There was less emphasis on formal nights which was a pity as it is always nicer if people make the effort in the main restaurants. Fine if people don't want to dress up in a tuxedo but some could try a little harder! A nice new touch is the free ice cream - they used to charge but you can now get it free. The coke package is good for the Med as it is so hot - but you need to have at least 3 sodas a day to get value from the package. Good alternative options in the dining room for those wanting plainer food. The Steakhouse (charge applies) was very good - but massive use of garlic!
Entertainment was hit and miss - at least the main acts were singers and musicians rather than obscure variety acts. However, some of the acts shouldn't even be appearing at the end of the pier in Blackpool.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming - however there is a general air of trying to get customers to pay for extras such as bottled water and speciality coffees. This seems to be becoming more common and is slightly irritating, but there are usually cheaper (free) options.
Shore excursions in Cadiz, Florence, Rome and Sardinia were good if perhaps a little expensive. Barcelona is easy to do on your own - despite the pickpockets. Shuttle Buses to the town centre should be free if the ship isn't within walking distance - again charging for shuttles seems to be becoming more common.
Overall an excellent cruise and I would sail with Princess again and on the same ship - as a Platinum member it was a boon to be able to get straight on the ship rather than queue at Southampton.
Quality of Food
We ate in the main dining room - used anytime dining. Tried the Steakhouse once. Food was very good with good alternative choices if needed - though we rarely used them
Entertainment
Berni Flint and Dianne Cousins were very good. Syd Little didn't impress - but not unexpected as he was the straight man from Little and Large.
Shore Excursions
Florence waking tour and Art Galleries - excellent.
Cable Car in Gibraltar was spoiled as there was low cloud and couldn't see the Rock!
Staff
All very courteous and efficient - no special recommendations
