GETTING TO SHIP.
i used budget airline to BREMEN, then left my luggage at the station and took at lookat the maritime museum in HAMBURG. it was the best museum i have ever seen, models, portraits. then got the train to BREMERHAVEN and found the hotel i had booked. as this was a group cruise organised through OCEAN LINER SOCIETY. there were a lot of the other members staying therelovelyhotel with lots of pictures of ships there. after breakfast the next day, one of the members an american gave us a lift in his hired car to the port. as we had organised a ship visit before boarding the MAXIM GORKY on the ALBATROS. luckily they took our luggage as soon as we got there. after a ship visit which was lovely we queued up to board our ship.
after a short check in, and had our pictures taken i was shown my cabin. an outside cabin at the front of the ship.
it was a pleasant surprise seeing how large the cabin was with a shower. it was a bit of a struggle seeing out of my porthole without climbing on the table.
there were 3 restaurants but depending where your cabin was where you had. mine was the CRIMEA which was on the lower deck and no view out! which was a shame and as it was the area where the water came in when she hit an iceberg a few years ago it had been refurbished. as we were the only british on the ship(it is marketed to german's) thery realluy went out of their way. they printed the menus in english which was a great help. included in the price was wine with meals which was very nice. the food was good but not as much choice as on other ships.
i was a bit deterred in going to the shows mainly as they would be all in german. also as the dinner finished very close to the shows i did not go to any, but i heard they were very good.
as these were also all in german i did not take any offered on the ship.
we left BREMERHAVEN just after the ALBATROS which we had just visited.
today we were in the north sea, i had a walk around deck which was quite difficult as it was very narrow at the front below the bridge and there were no body else doing the walk. in the afterrnoon i went to the gym, it was quite small with only 3 treadmills.
today we called at VIK then on to FLAM. as i had done the FLAM TRAIN before i just did a walk to get some good pictures of the ship.
today we were in ALESUND then onto GEIRANGER. as the last time i was in GEIRANGER i had a virus so could not get out of my cabin it was nice to take a look around.
today we were in BERGEN where i had been to before, i changed some currency but it did not last very long. i bought a sandwich and went up the funicular railway which was well worth doing.
today we were at sea, they showed the film where MAXIM GORKY hit the iceberg. also JUGGERNAUT the film done onboard the ship, both in german. farewell cocktail dinner tonight was quite sad. we had BAKED ALASKA which i love.
today was the end of the cruise as we docked in BREMERHAVEN.
after breakfast we got the ship very quickly at 0915, then did the other ship visit on AMADEA a much more modern ship. after which was given a lift tio the station for the flight home.
i'm glad i had taken this cruise mainly because it is a lovely old ship with original in many areas. as the deal with ORIENT LINES did not happen it is possible she will not sail any more.
