Cruise Line: P&O Cruises Times cruised before: 0
Cruise Ship: Ventura Sailed: June, 2009
Destination: Western Europe Age: 46-55
Cabin: Balcony Occasion: Family holiday
As first time cruisers we were not sure what to expect, having looked at mixed reviews for this ship, but any worries we had were unfounded and we had a lovely time. We were very pleasantly surprised at the size of our cabin which more than met our needs for the amount of space and facilities provided. It was first class in terms of how clean and comfortable it was, shower was great and the steward very pleasant and accommodating, clean towels twice a day. I know we have nothing to compare it with, but we were more than satisfied with all that we had in terms of service and quality of holiday. Children were on board and by and large were well behaved, the ship is large and plenty of space available to find a quiet spot if required. Entertainment was good and of a high standard, food was also very good and a good choice available, something for everyones tastebuds. The waiting staff we found were always polite and courteous, attentive, nothing too much trouble, we were freedom dining and found it worked very well for us. When we requested a table by the window and sea view we were given a pager and waited a short time for one to become available, then quickly seated. We did not go on any pre-planned shore excursions which we thought were abit expensive so we did our own thing and kept to our own leisurely time table and did not feel hurried. Free shuttle buses were provided at most ports where walking was involved which proved a great asset. To conclude this holiday for us was one to savour and remember and we hope to repeat it in the very near future back on the Ventura or possibly another P&O ship just to compare, well done P&O. One last thing, use of hand cleaning gel was used extensively throughout the ship which was very reassuring, and most people adhered to the common sense practice of using it.

Are you guys on the same ship as Ive been on coz it wasnt as good as you point out. The ship was crowded and not at all smooth across the biscay. The staff disorganised and the restaurants location was a cryton factor not knowing how to get to your sitting. Having had 5 cruises with different lines this was not a good experience!

Glad you liked Ventura as we go on her in the next few weeks and as this is our first time on this ship it is reassuring to read such positive comments. Our first cruise was on the Victoria back in 2002 which was our first cruise. We have been hooked on cruising ever since and frankly don,t believe in the saying that those who cruise are either "Newly wed or nearly dead" I'm definitely not the former and hopefully not the latter.
Opinion: Agree Comment by Phillips, Whittle-le-Woods, Chorley, Lancashire (07 Jul 09 10:34) about this REVIEW
we went on the Christmas New Year cruise which seemed to cause a lot bother . We had a fantastic Cruise did not see any of the problems that was on TV Radio etc but only people that stay up drinking most of the night have these problems. We normally go to bed around 12 midnight to 2 am. We love Ventura Ken and Susan, Whittle-le-Woods, Chorley, Lancashire Age range 65 to 75

Glad you enjoyed your first cruise, always the best I think what with the excitement and the "newness" ! We've cruised over 30 times with most of the major lines but are always satisfied with P&O, they suit us fine though we do keep away from the school holidays having experienced the consequences of them twice !! Try the Oriana or the Aurora if you want a more "traditional cruising" ambiance.

Just love the idea that you have cruised over 30 times - I'm a delicate shade of green right at this moment!!!! My husband and I have only cruised 3 times and all with Cunard. So, what other ships would you recommend which would give us the same type of cruising experience i.e lots of space per head, quiteness and the pleasure of dressing for dinner? As there are quite alot of 'offers' at the moment I am keen to try a different company although my husband is somewhat aprehensive. I would value your expertise. Many thanks

Sorry for the delay, just, (this afternoon) got back from a cruise to the Baltic on the Artemis (P & O child free ) an old ship but it grows on you , four formal nights, four Semi formal and six smart casual. As I said before, the Oriana and the Aurora are, in my opinion, the best with P & O. Celebrity, as Checkley of Bristol states are very good ( white glove service etc ) Cunard of course, as you already know given a certain price range take some beating; if you want to pay more and go "up market" try Radisson or Silversea though they can tend to be somewhat "Snobby" We like the dressing up bit, it's part of the cruising tradition but now under pressure I'm afraid; the "dress down" brigade are gaining strength ! ( Three more booked into 2011, carry on cruising !!!) Kind regards.

Tried quite a few and I low Cunard - but I also found Celebrity to be equally good (although noone does afternoon tea quite like Cunard) and will always try to book one of these two lines. I have also been told that Azamara is excellent. I'm just off to pack for my Med. cruise on Queen Victoria tomorrow!

I think your husband is right to be apprehensive, although Oriana and Aurora offer the best space ratio and high quality cruising P&O have to offer it does not compare to Cunard. My advice would be to carry on cruising with Cunard, the grass isnt greener with any other cruise line.

You won't go wrong with P&O. we went to the Baltics on Arcadia and enjoyed the "child free" and traditional aspects. I think Artemis is also child free. We've also cruised four times on P & O's Oceana. There were children aboard so they tell me, but we were hardly aware of them. Dress code was formal or smart casual so there was plenty of scope for dressing for dinner!

ive been on large and small ships in past ...find thomson line very nice also....most people i found dressed for dinner every night, and i have allways found the food to be excellent along with every thing else... they are a good price line also. not on the large side like cunard or p.p but worth a look tho. we have just picked up a bargain of 350.00 each west med for a week going in oct so bargains deffo to be found around the cruise ships at this time
