Hello, Booked to take 8 members of my family on the Oceana for the Barbados to Acapulco via Panama canal starting the 19th February 2010, we have been on the ship many times previously so knew what to expect. We had Hamish Reid, P & O's senior Captain and what a friendly, approachable and nice guy. Throughout the cruise we were struck by quite a reduction in staff, we estimated about 25%, which did impact on service at busy times on deck or in the bar areas.
Food in the Adriatice Restaurant was excellent and vastly improved from last year and our waiters were very good.
The cabin staff were their normal helpful selves and did their best despite having been given 15% more cabins to maintain. There just seemed to be less live entertainment on the ship or maybe that was us missing things.
There is a change in the Art on board vendor, this is better and improved value, yes we are amongst those whom buy art on board, this time a beautiful picture for our Daughters wedding anniversary.
We have never used the kids facilities until this time and found that our 7 and 11 year old grandaughters enjoyed every minute, what great service from all the childrens staff on board, thankyou.
After 40 years marriage we decided to renew our vows on the ship, fantastic value and a really nice ceremony from Captain Reid, highly recommended if you are in half a mind to do something similar.
The ships air conditioning failed as we were en-route into Curacao and took a day to sort, we never realised just how dependant a ship is on A/C but we could have been in a worse place as Cuacao is really nice and one of our favourite places. P & O placed £20 credit on everyones on board account so we could eat off which was decent of them although some wanted more!
The highlight of the cruise was the Panama Canal transit which we had to delay for a day, having never been through before it was a fantastic experience and one not to be missed.
Eventually we arrived in Acapulco for an overnight in port before we flew home, what a nice place and definitely one we will come back to. Whilst in the UK we saw from this site a recommendation to an excursion company in Acapulco, tourbyvan.com owned by Rudy and had booked him to meet us at the port entrance for a full day of swimming with dolphins, city tour, meal, releasing turtles etc. Without doubt this was the best tour we have ever been on, brilliant value, fabulous vehicle and knowledgeable guide. We are more than happy to give you a recommendation to meet Rudy if you get to Acapulco as you will not regret this one bit.
So overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable cruise, the members of my family whom had not cruised before all enjoyed themselves and were blown away by Oceana. We did notice little things like less staff etc which impacted the service we expected slightly but, to be fair, we are nit picking in this.
Looking forward to the Christmas cruise on Azura. Thanks for reading this and hope it is of assistance.
Pauline and Chris

Hello, we are going on Oceana next year through the canal and found your review most helpful. Could you provide the full details of how to contact Rudy for Accapulco, kind regards

My Husband and I were on the Oceana in Feb, loved every minute, so much so have booked to do the Panama next Feb, which is my husband's 50th - Hamish Reid the brilliant captain sang happy birthday to him this year - hope he will for his next 'big' birthday.
We found the food excellent, something to please everyone. We found no faults at all with anything.
I would be most grateful if you could give me contact details for your tour in Acapulco.
Thank you.
Debbie Green. London.

It was very interesting reading your review of the time you spent on Oceana. We are taking our two (grown up) sons on a mini cruise over Easter on Oceana. Whilst they are pleased it\'s classed as a \'party\' cruise, I do feel slightly worried and hope that all will be well as we want to encourage our sons to do some cruising, not put them off! At the end of the day you hope for reasonable behaviour by others/entertaining entertainment/food that you will remember for good reasons/comfy clean stateroom/friendly staff. Anything else would be a bonus! Fingers crossed!

We did something similar on Oceana a couple of years ago over 3 nights. If anything the entertainment was slightly better than normal, couple of headline acts were onboard, and there was a very relaxed feel about the ship. Had one formal night which was great and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Your lads will enjoy it I am sure and will want more.

Kerry, If you are Freedom dining then there is a levy of about £1.60 per day per passenger placed on your bill to pay for restaurant staff as you will not be served by the same staff. You can go to the Pursers desk and have this removed, increased or decreased with no hassle. All other tipping is as you see fit, usually Cabin Steward, Resturant Waiters, and any other member of staff giving good service. Advise is in each cabin and the norm to give tips the last night in small envelopes provided. It is very relaxed and do not let it worry you.
