North West of Iceland is not the place you want to be in a Force 11 storm. We were in a front cabin the night of the storm and each wave that shook the ship also made a metallic clang that denied us a wink of sleep. During the night we began to hear water sloshing back and forth under the bathroom floor and I was deeply afraid that the shaking had caused the ship's sewage system to collapse - it hadn't. As day dawned sea water was flooding across the cabin carpet and we employed towels to stop its progress towards our beds. Water was also coming in round the edges of the window which was not surprising as I think one wave went right over the ship. The engines were cut back when we were hit by these heavy waves and we were full of admiration for the crew who kept them going, although I cannot recount the terror of the moment when I thought we had actually lost the engines. Having read other people's comments, I personally think it is immaterial how many life rafts were lost as there would have been no one out there to save us in that rough icy water if we had gone down. Drifting onto jagged volcanic rocks wouldn't have been great either! We are off to the Mediterranean next in a brand new ship. In fact I understand that one life raft inflated, hand rails were lost on the front deck outside our cabin and the metal shield outside the door to this deck was bent and buckled. The crew replaced our cabin carpet during the day while it was still rough and the corridor carpet the next day. Other repair work carried on throughout the cruise and we were impressed by the resourcefulness of the crew.
