A diappointing , expensive cruise

Destination: Caribbean Age: 56-65
Cabin: Suite Occasion: Annual/regular holiday
We were really looking forward to spending Xmas and the new year cruising the Caribbean on Arcadia and this was our first cruise with P & O but our eighth cruise experience. We had a "Mini - suite " with a balcony ; which was fine . The food was not brilliant and somewhat repetitive but Xmas passed almost un-noticed as did New year, no atmosphere of celebration or fun.The ship was a "Money making" machine and we even paid almost £10-00 for ten earl grey teabags [ later refunded ]
The last straw was when our new friends in the same class neighbouring cabins showed us their cruise invoice and it was around £4000-00 less than we paid. We have written to P & O but they do not want to know and offered no recompense.
Their written response to this huge cost variation was - "As a commercial organisation I am sure that you will appreciate that it is in OUR interests to obtain the highest revenue for each stateroom sold". What an attitude to paying customers !!
There are no "Hand anticeptic" dispensers in the public toilets and no supervision over the use of those at restuarant entrances. No more P & O for us thank you, a rip off !.

Why did you not get earl grey tea bags from the self service area where tea bags were freely available. And where did you purchase them from?? I didn't see any for sale but took my own twinings earl grey tea bags as I don't like the tetley ones. I could have sold you some of mine ;-0) You must have been on a different cruise to me. The only thing I would say was I missed young people on this cruise and kids! Yes I know it was adult only a big mistake if you ask me. Christmas is all about kids! And now mine are gown up it's lovely to see others little ones enjoying the day! Arcadia is a lovely ship but not right for Xmas caribbean! And they are doing it on her again next year (2011).

I was also on this same cruise and wrote a review within days of our return, a review that could not be at more odds to this review. I could not disagree more that either Christmas or New Year passed \'almost un-noticed\'. The ship was very tastefully decorated and a full programme of entertainment was offered. In addition to the normal activities additional Deck parties were held on both Christmas and New Years Eve. Indeed, the New Year\'s Eve Party, around the Aquarius Pool, was amazing, not just for the numbers attending, but the fact we rendezvoused with Ventura and sailed in tandem for some length of time. Great atmosphere if you were there! I also seem to recall that Marti Webb was the lead entertainer Christmas Day and again, a well attended Christmas Night Ball was enjoyed by the many that attended. I would of course wonder if your discovery that a friend paid considerably less has any influence on your review. Winding-up ones fellow cruisers is a national pastime and not just restricted to P&O either. So much always depends on when and with whom you make your reservation. I made my reservation particularly early through the good services of cruise.co.uk (this website\'s owners). They clipped £750 per person off the P&O brochure \'pricebreaker\' fare, free parking for over three weeks and a £250 onboard credit. Put in perspective, all this discount for a cruise that is one of the most popular in the annual calendar, particularly amongst P&O\'s considerable loyal passenger numbers.

this is a 2 or 3 star ship claiming to be 4 star. when I was confinned to my cabin (its not what I would describe as a suite) for 48 hours because I was diagnose as having swine flu the butler asked me to phone him by 8 am to order my breakfast as he had other duties to attend to. As for the canapes he trotted in each night I think they must have come from Iceland. We will never set foot on P&O again overpriced & little regard for their customers.

we did the Christmas/New year cruise with that ship, and I 100% agree with you, the waiter, assistant waiter, cabin attendant were quite good, the management were verging on downright rude, I have never been on such a badly run ship in my life, and I have 47 cruises under my belt. We were booked on the Ventura this month, but cancelled it. If you had booked with celebrity or Royal Caribbean and you found the same cruise at a cheaper rate after you had booked then they guarantee they will refund the difference, and they DO. They also only charge £200 deposit, not like the rest which normally require 10%. I now only cruise Celebrity and Royal Caribbean with an occasional Cunard thrown in for good measure. P&O customer relations are even worse than their ships staff, and that is really saying something, Like you I will NEVER sail P&O ever again.

You say you have travelled on Royal Caribbean. We would like to try a cruise with them, we are in our early 60's, but wonder if they generally cater for a younger age group?

Think you'll feel at home on RCI's Independence of the Seas no matter what your age. We're in our mid 50s and enjoyed it so much last year we've booked again this year. We didn't try the Flowrider or climbing wall but enjoyed watching people who did and if you just want to sit somewhere with a book and watch the sea then there are places to do that too. It seemed to us to be a good family ship and if you go in mid June then there will be children on board because the Scottish and US schools break up earlier than England but we found the activities for them were such that we didn't see much of them. There was so much to do that I could always find something interesting..... Liz

Peter, Could not agree with you more. We have cruised with P&O for many years, and seen the general detoriation of service both on board and ashore. P&O have lost our business, already had 3 cruise with Royal Caribean and Celebrity last year, and 5 more booked. We loved the Owners Suite on IOTS, we had the same one as you, really puts P&O suites to shame!
