Cruise Line: P&O Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Arcadia Sailed: June, 2009
Destination: Baltic Age: 56-65
Cabin: Balcony
Arrived at the terminal 11.40 bags out of car valet parking ready to drive away.Sat down for a light lunch at 12.20. The best embarkation time we have ever had at any port.In cabin at 1.15 bags already waiting certainly P&O seam to handle baggage better than others. As we have been on Arcadia before the balcony cabin on A deck was as expected, plenty of room even for the amount of clothes my wife always takes.
Sailed just before 5.00 on a beautifully day watching the hundreds of small sailing craft on the way down the Solent.
Second dinner seating at a table for eight. As previously on Arcadia we found our dining companions to be both very friendly easy to get on with and good company. We have found for some reason we cannot work out that fellow passengers on this ship always seem far more friendly and easy to get on with than on any of the many other ships we have sailed on,both from home and fly cruises. Does anybody else have a view on this or an awnser?.We were a little disappointed with the choice of menu in the dining room on a few nights we had to revert to the sirloin as nothing else appealed.Although not as good as the last time overall the dining room food was ok.P&O will have to improve in this area now that Celebrity are operating from there home port as from past experience the food even in self service is far superior on Celebrity. The service though was good. As for the Belvedere the lunchtime (non salad)food was very poor, little choice a occasional shortage of certain cutlery and were have all the joints of meat disappeared to.On the other side though the cold buffet was in general very good.Howeaver all was not lost as at lunch you can always use the Neptune Grill only a limited choice but very good. We used both the Arcadian Rhodes and the Orchid which you cannot fault they are both excellent and good value as well.We found all the staff onboard to be very good always there to help, and again a very good cabin steward. We very much liked Captain Walters his daily PA broadcasts were both informative and good natured unlike some other Captains whose attitude towards there passengers can be somewhat aloof. My wife really enjoyed the Headliners Theatre Company she thought they were amongst the best she has seen .She also enjoyed her many trips to the hairdresser whom she assures me was excellent value ?.This cruise we did our own thing ashore (due to the many trips to the hairdresser) JOKE. Seriously though all ports were easy to visit either walk in or shuttle bus,Bremerhaven was quite interesting in particular the wwii sub,Oslo worth taking the local tour bus which operates from the quay 225dk each but if you take the shuttle the cost is 6e each and all the tour buses return to the ship, Copenhagen again east to walk in, but no evening busses laid on to the Gardens which are best seen at night. For some reason P&O are missing a trick here,Aarhus first visit but thanks to a question I asked on this site we visited the old town that has been recreated about a twenty minute walk from the ship, this is a must visit place with houses rebuilt dating from the 16hundreds, also a nice place to have lunch at not over the odds prices.Amsterdam docked in the commercial port so a free 25 min shuttle. City tour bus and canal cruise for 28e good, together with a walk into the red light district VERY intresting.Zeebrugge shuttle to Brandenburg train runs 10 past the hour to Bruges at a cost of 3.60e ret, about a 15 min journey and what a beautifully city it is. Again a canal cruise is a must trains return at38min past. So back to Southampton, a very good disembarkation at the new terminal and across to the car. Overall will we travel P&O again YES.

Yes quite agree with your comments regarding the quality of the food especially in the Belvedere. We had not been on Arcadia for some time and was shocked at the poor quality food being offered. Overall though we throughly enjoyed the cruise.
