We chose the Oceania cruise to the Caribbean to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary because it was a smaller ship and the itinerary looked interesting. We were not disappointed. A major benefit is the size of the ship. On many of our ports of call we did not have to share the island with several thousand passengers that had been disgorged by four or five huge cruise ships. The only downside to the ship's size was the very small swimming pool. It was very cosy once 8 or 10 people were in!
The crew wre very friendly, approachable, well trained and nothing was too much trouble for them. The cabin was clean, reasonably spacious and well maintained. The restaurants lived up to their promise and were all very good in their own way. However, our favourite was the Tapas Restaurant at the stern of the ship where we could sit out on the deck and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and clear fresh Caribbean air. We enjoyed the open dining, meeting many interesting fellow passengers from various parts of the world.
We only booked three organised excursions, although we would very much recommend hiring a car on St Barts as this is the best way to see the island. We recommend doing your own thing virtually everywhere as you can organise exactly the same itineraries for less than half the price of the official excursions. The other official trip that we feel is a must is the speedboat trip to the mangrove swamps and caves at the Dominican Republic.
The islands we visited were all interesting, with the exception of Grand Turk, which really is only on the itinerary as a staging post to break up the journey and Dominica, which has not yet caught up with the requirements of the tourist industry. St Barts was brilliant but expensive. You will need Euros or plastic on this island.
We have to say that the cruise is very much for those of us of advancing years. We like to think that we were contributory in managing to keep the average age on our cruise down to only 76!! The advertised evening entertainment did not particularly inspire us so we cannot comment on this aspect of the cruise. Not that we needed entertaining. By the time we had benefitted from the excellent value Happy Hour each evening, showered and changed for dinner, had an aperitif and a leisurely meal and chatted to friends we had made there was very little left of the evening.
For anyone in their mid fifties or over we thoroughly recommend this cruise. For people below this age you might find it to be a bit too sedate.
Quality of Food3
Used all the restaurants but mainly the Tapas Restaurant on the stern deck. Seafood was particularly good. We were disappointed that there was very little local Caribbean dishes served, it was predominantly "European/American" fare.
Entertainmentn/a
Did not make use of the entertainment
Shore Excursions2
Best excursions were speedboat trip to mangroves at Dominican Republic and car hire on St Barts. Grand Turk and Dominica were a waste of time.
Staff5
All the staff were very good but the one who impressed us the most was one of tghe waitresses in the Tapas Restaurant who came from Eastern Europe but whose name escapes us.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities3
The choice of activities was reasonable. We particularly benefitted from the Digital Photography classes.
Cabins3
Cabin was pretty much what we expected
