We sailed on Insignia after recommendations to this cruise line. It was a 15 night cruise from Rio de Janeiro to Barcelona. The passengers consisted of 60% from the US, 20 % Canadian and the rest of us from around the World ... only about 30 guests from the UK.
We stayed five days in Rio at the luxurious Copacabana Palace before the cruise and were a little apprehensive about safety in Rio but had no problems at all, just use basic common sense wherever you go.
Insignia was full with around 680 passengers and our concierge level veranda stateroom was well appointed on Deck 7. We had no complaints except that the concierge/butler facility was never seen throughout the cruise. The two speciality restaurants, Polo and Toscana were excellent. One benefit of the concierge stateroom was that two bookings were allowed in each restaurant during the cruise. The food quality in these restaurants was exceptional and the service very efficient. The same could be said for the other restaurants on the ship.
One problem of a smaller ship such as Insignia is the poor standard of entertainment compared with the bigger ships . Last summer we cruised on Celebrity Equinox to the Norwegian Fjords and the entertainment was very professional, easily up to West End standards, but it was fairly basic on Insignia.
Our cruise called at Salvador and Recife in Brazil before crossing the equator en route to Cape Verde, an interesting island where it rarely rains. In fact, the last rainfall was over two years ago!
We called at Agadir in Morocco before our final destination in Barcelona. Towards the end of our cruise, discussions centred around the volcanic ash cloud over Europe and the effect it was having on flights. We intended to fly home the afternoon we arrived in Barcelona but this was not to be. Eventually we left five days later having had an enforced stay. Barcelona is a wonderful place to be marooned and one we shall certainly revisit. It transpired US and Canadian bookings with Oceania could buy the whole package inclusive of flights, transfers and cruise. This meant the unexpected cost of hotels, transfers and food was the responsibilty of Oceania for the extra nights they had to stay in Barcelona. We had booked cruise only so the hotel stay in Barcelona was at our expense. I know we could have asked our travel agent to do the whole thing, but we had arranged our own hotel in Rio and weren't expecting flight problems at the other end. Fortunately, we have good insurers and they reimbursed us in full ... hotels, taxis, meals, the lot! All credit to Guest Relations on the ship, they did find us a hotel in Barcelona for the cruise only passengers before we docked.
We will choose Oceania again. We liked the size of Insignia, the friendliness of the crew and made many new friends. The open seat dining options were good and we liked the relaxed dress code, although people seemed to dress smarter as the cruise wore on! Previously, we have sailed NCL, Celebrity and Silversea but this was one of the best cruise lines we have been on.

Glad you enjoyed your trip on Insignia, we found the staff fantastic, so efficient and friendly. Seems a very happy ship. I agree about the food, it's excellent and I did love being able to eat when you feel like it and not having to queue either even in the buffet. Much better than the Berlitz guide indicates. We the buffet and loved eating outside. Have to say I liked the low key entertainment. The deputy cruise director, Sian, was a wonderful singer/pianist. She was an absolute delight and gave us a CD recording of her performance. The other cruise singer Frances was a great singer too and we loved the string quartet especially when they played during the fabulous teas! I suppose they change them regularly. Ours was a Med cruise and at least one of the entertainers just joined them for the cruise and was flying home when we docked. You mentioned the US flights, they seem to include these free but they don't offer them to anyone outside the US which makes the cruises expensive. The prices have been shot up this year, they're double what we paid last September. Our cruise agent's company had a good dollar exchange deal last year but that's obviously gone. They have few special offers, they don't need them, they get booked up so quickly. I'd love to cruise with Oceania again but at the prices they're charging in the UK at present I'm sadly looking for another line.

You say your insurers reimbursed you in full. What company was this, please? G Brown

My wife and I are automatically insured when I book the holiday with my NatWest Black Card, it's one of the inclusive benefits. The insurers are Charteris Insurance. M Kirkpatrick
