We have just returned from Santiago, having done a cruise around Cape Horn from Buenos Aires. The itinerary was brilliant, calling at Montivadeo,Puerto Madryn,Falkland Islands,Ushuaia, cruising the Beagle channel,Punta Arenas, cruising the Chilean Fjords,Puerto Chacabuco,Puerto Montt and Valparaiso.

We only took two tours as the tours offered by the ship were very expensive...we took a tour from Puerto Madryn (there's very little to see here) to Punta Tombo to see the largest rookery of penguins in South America.Although it was a journey of 100kms it was well worth while as we saw hundreds of Magellenic penguins and their fluffy babies. The second tour we took was from Puerto Chacabuco, which is not a very interesting port of call,to the Simpson valley, and a journey over the Andes to Coyhaquie...the scenery was stunning...waterfalls and snow capped mountains...I would really recommend this trip.

We were a little disappointed with our ship on this cruise...the cabin was very good ...clean and well appointed and reasonably spacious but we were unhappy with the dining arrangements as we usually had to queue for a table and although we were happy to share a table this wasn't always possible as the majority of the passengers were spanish speaking....perhaps freestyle dining isn't for us.We had taken formal evening clothes with us and were very disappointed that very few passengers were in dinner jackets on the two formal evenings(the ship called them 'dress up or not' evenings)....so if you like formal dining this is not the cruise for you.
We had two nights stay in Buenos Aires pre cruise and on the first morning my husband had his pocket picked and didn't know about until a very kind Argentinian passerby told him...someone had sprayed him with lime and water, which looked just like bird dirt and then proceeded to clean us up and also clean out my husband's back pocket!!! Do take great care in both Buenos Aires and Santiago.

We did the same itinerary on the Regal Princess. The passengers were mostly Spanish speaking and even though we were on a Princess ship some of the game shows and quizzes were in Spanish so we couldn't take part. The ship generally didn't cater for English speaking passengers as much as Spanish. We also had the same problem as you regarding the dining arrangements when we were on the NCL Majesty in the Caribbean. We find that the American passengers seem to prefer casual dress rather than the formal nights.

So sorry about the pickpocketing....this con seems to be a favourite around the world. NCL are famous for their informal cruises, and are used especially by those who prefer not to take formal clothes. Some people love this- we do- but others don't, as you've found out. It's quite rare to see many dressed up on their ships, but of course, it doesn't matter either way....freedom works both ways!- Jo.
