We as a couple of had the pleasure of enjoying different cruises with various cruise lines. As always part of the joy is comparing what is on offer. Our last cruise was with NCL on the ship Spirit, itinary was picking the ship up in Barcelona, Maderia, Santa Cruz, Arrecife, Malaga and returning to Barcelona, dates travelled 12 March to 21 March 2013.
Our experience was a very positive one. We really enjoyed the anytime dining, normally on previous cruises we have opted for second sitting. At the beginning of the cruise there was some waiting for tables however this was not a problem and if the queue was very long, we were given a voucher for a glass for champagne and a buzzer to advise when a table was ready. We always asked for a table for two and again this was not a problem. We ate in the Windows restaurant which was a lovely room.
Our inside cabin was small but had all the necessary amenties including a large shower with a door as opposed to curtain.
Food was very good, we only used the dining options that had no surcharges. Sometime the food was warm rather than hot but this is probably logistics and the food and choice was a very good quality so this did not deter from our enjoyment.
Evening enterainment was varied and of a high standard, and you could always get a seat in the main theatre.
Tipping is automatically added to your cabin on a daily basis and there is a 15% service charge for all drinks. We asked for the tipping to be removed from our account, we were asked to sign a disclaimer which we did and tipped as normal the staff who had given us good service.
As you arrive on ship there are options to buy wine and beer packages. We checked the price of the wine in the dining room and found that the wine packages are better value.
This ship seemed to have a 'hard' sell on selling raffle tickets and bingo. But it is an individuals choice on whether to purchase or not.
Also I like to play roulette (not on a big scale) however your chip is a dollar and a minumum 5 dollar per spin is required, you have to buy 50 dollars of chips to commence betting.
Ports of call
On all you were able to either walk into the town or take advantage of a free shuttle bus or with the exception of Malaga pay a small fee for a return journey. We had taken the option to stay in Barcelona for two nights prior to sailing, we had lovely weather and their is such a lot to see. If you are not able to walk you can always take advantage of the Red City buses (also available in Maderia, Santa Cruz and Malaga).
Although the ship is older we thought the public areas were kept to a very high standard.
We would certainly cruise with NCL again.
Quality of Food
We ate in Raffles and the Windows restaurant in the main. Enjoyed lovely steaks as part of our evening meal and salads for lunch.
We enjoyed the shows delivered by the on board dancers and singings, the Beatles tribute show and the english juggler comedian.
We did not partake of any excursions, however we had not visited Malaga as a port destination prior to this cruise and was very impressed.
