My husband and I and two friends have just returned from a 7 night cruise around the Western Caribbean leaving from New Orleans. We were lucky enough to spend 3 nights which included New Year's Eve in New Orleans and had a wonderful exciting time before we boarded the Spirit.
This is our fourth cruise on an NCL ship and as always found the whole cruise experience very good. The staff are NCL's best asset, they are always courteous, attentive and fun. They never pass you on the ship without a nod or a greeting of some sort. My friends were very impressed with the attentiveness of the staff and the hand cleaning that went on. We have all been on lots of cruises together including P & O, Royal Caribbean and Fred Olsen. This was our friend's first cruise with NCL and they were very impressed and I am sure will be taking another one as we will in 2013

The places we visited were not as beautiful as the Eastern Caribbean islands although we did an excursion (not with NCL) in Belize to the Mayan Ruins which was about 15 miles inland and had a great day with a very good local tour guide (of which there are many on the quay side). We tended just to stay around the local ports on our other stops

The Spirit is a very smart looking liner as it was built over 10 years ago and it retains a more charming appearance. However, we didn't find it as easy to get around as on the Gem it didn't flow as well.

We dined every night at the main dining room The Windows and never had trouble getting a table. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly and the food was always of a good quality but sometimes not as hot as it could be. We never felt the need to use any of the speciality restaurants. We always ate breakfast and lunch on the Raffles Terrace (24 hour) self service as luckily the weather was beautiful so we took good advantage before returning to cold England.

We had a outside stateroom which was of a good size and looked after very well by our steward Billy.

The entertainment was pretty good with a very funny Magician who reminded us of a Greek Tommy Cooper and the grand finale show in the theatre was fantastic. There were very good singers in both Henry's Pub and Champagne Charlie's.

Because we have to pay the gratuities up front on NCL we always pay them when we book the cruise (it works out a bit cheaper) and we are of the opinion that because we don't sit at the same table every night and are able to eat where and when we want the staff in the restaurants are a lot more relaxed with us and seem genuinely happy in our company.

We plan to sail again with NCL in 2013, not sure what ship or what destination but we know we will get a warm welcome from everyone.
