NCL Jade - No Frills, No Thrills.

Cruise Line: NCL Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Norwegian Jade Sailed: February, 2010
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 46-55
Cabin: Balcony
We sailed on the Jade from Barcelona at the end of February for 9 nights, calling at Casablanca, Agadir, Gran Canaria, Madeira and Malaga.
Overall it was an enjoyable holiday, with great weather considering the time of year and fantastic ports of call.
The Jade is a well run and maintained ship as you would expect, and the staff try their best to meet passengers needs, mostly with success.
The food is reasonable for the numbers being catered for, with a large selection of cuisines available from the different restaurants. The entertainment is O.K., again with different options that try to meet different requirements.
Unfortunately though, nothing on-board ship was outstanding or even above average.
However, our problem with the Jade is that all the touches that make cruising special have been removed, apparently in the name of the NCL tag line "Freedom Cruising".
For example, hardly anyone dresses smartly for dinner or any other occasion, and whilst I always found formal gowns and dinner suits over the top (which is why we have sailed NCL 5 times), people wearing jeans, t-shirts and sandals 24/7 is depressing.
Similarly the captain's reception drink for everyone has gone, as have chocolates on pillows.
There are other minor things that are not done anymore, which do seem petty and inconsequential, but are the touches that make cruising different.
NCL appear to be aiming the Jade as a competitor to the 2 week summer sun package holiday, possibly in an attempt to attract a younger clientele, but will need to change radically their offering if that is really the aim.
This no frills, no thrills approach will end up attracting no-one.

I understood your comments in your review & thought it very helpful...... Even though i am a jeans person 99% of the time I didn't feel your comments were personal. I thought Taylor's comment was quite hurtful & could put some people off leaving comments, which would be a shame.

I agree with you about the no frills bit. I have sailed RCCI, P&O, Thomson, Airtours (in the old days) and about to do celebrity and my least favourite was Nowegian Jade (eveon given the age of the Thomson ships). The Jade is a lovely ship with great amenities, but the lack of organisation at dinner spoilt it for me. I DO like the formal nights but I realise others may not, even so it would still have been nice to have felt welcome in the restaurant and as though it was some kind of occasion to eat each evening! I wasn't sure if they made the main restaurants feel unwelcoming so that you would go and try the many 'fee paying' options? Definitely won't choose NCL again.

if u want to see people dressed up, may i suggest you go on a ship thats not feestyling, most people these days dont like stuffy hob nob cruises, wearing silly dickie bows and all that crap at the captains table, most people these days like value for money, and not having people like you looking down ur noses at them like somthing on end of ur shoe, stick to hob nob cruises in future, and pay more then you wont be stuck with rif raf and peasants like us in jeans

What a shame some people cannot provide helpful comment but resort instead to meaningless drivel.

There is nothing wrong with keeping up standards when going for dinner at night on a cruise ship or anywhere else for that matter.I will be going on a cunard ship in april , and while i know it will be a dressy affair, i have been on a island cruise and still would not wear jeans and trainers to go to dinner at night. Aclean shirt and trousers is not too much to ask for.

Its not just ncl it seems to be a trend with most cruise lines now. Wear what you like Yes this is ok during the day time. But I like most cruise people like to dress up in the evening and have meaningful conversations with fellow guests. Lets keep the dress code long trousers ( not jeans) and Shirt (not T-shirts) after six inside the communal areas. I dont want to sit next to someone who hasn,t washed since morning and is in the same clothes they have worn all day.

One of the reasons of cruising is the elegant dressing up for evening meal. I was brought up in an era when you dressed smartly when you went out whether it was for a meal or disco. If you went to the theatre or casino you wore the appropriate attire. Today anything goes. Apart from the theatre or formal occasion there is nowhere to dress up (for a better word). As you say, anything goes. As for me for the worse and not the better. Dress needs to be appropriate to the occasion and not the same gear for everything. Maybe I am wrong but I feel the standard of dress even on TV has slipped too low. EDNA Wewant a badge

Yes, it appears the standard of cruising is diminishing. If people want to wear shell suits, sandals, football shirts and the like to evening dinner, then may I suggest they go to Butlins or just camping. Cruising is, as far as I am concerned an elegant holiday, and dressing for the evening is all part and parcel of it. I would refuse to sit with anybody at evening dinner who was dressed in the above attire. It just doesn't fit the surroundings. And more than not they would probably be refused entry to the restaurant. The no frills cruise is not for me.
