We booked on a 14 day cruise to the Med on the Norwegian Jade, having sailed twice the previous year on its sister ship The Gem (We have also previously cruised with Princess, RCL, P&O & Costa). I have previously written a very complimentary review regarding my experience on The Gem.

Although the Gem and the Jade are sister ships, I found The standards on both to be significantly different.

Let me say from the outset that I enjoyed my cruise on the Jade, nonetheless it was a notch lower in all areas when comparing it to the Gem .

To me a cruise is very much about atmosphere and a good atmosphere eminates in the first place from the ships crew. The crew on the Gem were a very happy bunch who not only were very outgoing and pleasant to the passengers but also interacted with each other in a very positive way. They appeared content in their surroundings and happy to do their respective jobs.

This spilled over to the passengers and makes for a very happy atmosphere.

On the Jade however things were not like this. Here was a work force who were clearly not happy in their surroundings and did not really care that the passengers picked up on this. I gave up trying to ellicit any basic courtesy from my cabin steward who clearly decided that he was not even prepared to make the effort of imparting a mannerly greeting to anyone . This generally sullen attitude was quite prevelant on this ship.

As a result of this standards on the Jade suffered. This ranged from minor things like not bothering to prepare the towel animals very often at night time to more serious things like a definite reduction in cleanliness standards both in the cabins and throughout the ship.

The food on the Jade whist being perfectly acceptable, did not reach the level offered on the Gem.

After my 1st cruise on the Gem I returned a second time within 3 months of the first.

Suffice it to say I will not be rushing back to the Jade.

I have just returned from a 9 day Canaries cruise on the Jade and agree with all the comments made. I have previously sailed with Royal Carribbean on the Vision of the Seas and the food and manner of the staff on the Jade was way below that of the Vision. I felt the wholw ethos of NCL is to get you to spend money and 12dollars a day service charge was too much.

We sailed to Norway in May 2009 to see the midnight sun. I can say the crew at that time were very obliging and helpful and can only think the crew must have changed for the med. The food on board by and large was very good. We found the entertainment very professional althought at time a little loud at times. Overall we found the cruise itself very good indeed and are going on another cruise to the Baltics on NCL Sun. This will be our third 'Freestyle' cruise with NCL. I am sure someone on our cruise had some complaint, you can't please everyone all the time. T & J Welwyn Garden City

How did the Gem compare to Princess and P & O please?
Answer by Quinn, Wishaw (01 Mar 10 09:45) to a QUESTION by Pat (28 Feb 10 22:51)
My experience with the Gem and the Jade illustartes that standards can vary greatly within the same cruise line. I have had very similar experiences with P & O with some very good cruises with them but one in particular not so. I have only sailed once with Princess and that was on the Emerald. I could not fault it. It is also difficult to compare cruises and give advice as preferences are an indivual matter. The Gem experience was a completely different one from the other Cruise lines I have sailed with and whilst we absolutely loved it, it may not to be everyone's taste. We like to dress up of an evening and whilst the Gem was less formal than others, we were nonetheless able to dress as we liked and did not feel out of place at any time. It seems to have got the dress code at a level that suits all tastes. This is difficult to envisage but it does work.
