FIRST CRUISE WITH NCL

This was our first cruise with NCL although we have previously cruised six times with RCI, once with Celebrity and once with Carnival.

We spent two nights before boarding the ship in Barcelona. As our hotel was a 2 minutes walk from the front we walked and discovered a public shuttle bus service operates (2 euros) each to take us to the ship.

On arrival at the terminal, it was a major surprise to learn of an outbreak of gastroenteritis (Norovirus) on board the ship and we were concerned that NCL did not consider a virus outbreak of this type to be of sufficient importance to inform boarding passengers of the situation prior to arrival in Barcelona as there had been a huge outbreak affecting passengers on the previous cruise. We agreed to board regardless of this information and embarkation was swift.

Our first stop once on board was the buffet, and it was here where we had our first experience of the sanitation measures in force to combat the virus. All staff had gloves on, and as well as the now customary hand sanitisation units, the ‘meet and greet’ crew at the buffet entrances had bottles of sterilisation liquid to ensure that everyone had their hands sterilised prior to eating. Plates and cutlery were handed to you by the crew; your food was served to you by the crew; your tea, coffee, and soft drinks were made for you by the crew. Passengers were not allowed to touch anything, not even pre-packed foods such as butter, biscuits, or fruit (never been served an orange by anyone using tweezers (ridiculous).

Our complaint therefore is that as a result of these measures, which were extreme and in many cases excessive in our opinion, our whole dining experience on the ship was ruined. The main focus of our complaint is in how the sanitisation measures were implemented in the buffet area as previously described. I am highlighting this area as it was here where we and most other passengers ate at least once a day, but more usually twice, and where snacks and beverages were also mainly available, and as such was the busiest area and also the area where we were most inconvenienced.

1. The service offered by many of the staff fell way short of how we would expect to be treated by cruise staff on any ship. Many of the staff lacked basic manners and were often rude and curt.
2. The queues were perpetual and, more often than not, long at beverage stations as the staff failed to keep up with demand.
3. The main serving areas were shut for sanitisation, presumably as part of the regime, far too early, leaving only one small serving area at the rear of the ship for many passengers who were not early risers.
4. Crockery was often far too hot to safely handle and no warnings were issued by the attendant. Also hot plates are not ideal for food items such as salad or fruit.
5. Wrapped and sealed condiments; butter, sugar, jam, salt, pepper, had to be queued for, asked for, and given out by staff; extreme in any circumstance.
6. Having been given your plated food, you then had to join another queue for your beverage, and by the time you received your beverage, and found a seat, your meal was cold.
7. We were categorically told on one afternoon that scones were only served with cream, and that jam and butter, were only available at breakfast. This was a blatant lie, as both were available on subsequent afternoons. We surmised that the staff couldn’t be bothered going for more jam and butter on that day!
8. There is nothing more infuriating than someone else pouring milk in your tea and coffee; either they pour in too much or too little; as happened to us on most occasions.

On the plus side, the ship was in good condition, and the freestyle dining worked for us. The ‘free’ dining areas were very good and the service was efficient and friendly. The food was perfectly acceptable with a reasonably good choice every night. One complaint would be that the food was never as hot as we would have liked, although we have found this with most of our other cruises lines ; it just seems to be a downside to the methods undertaken in serving restaurant food in a banquet style.

The pay restaurants are overpriced and were not very busy. We did eat in the Jade Garden, and found the service good (but no better than the ‘free’ restaurants) but the food nothing special.

My other complaint is on a more personal level. Having waited beyond 4:00pm to be allowed to our staterooms; sanitisation procedures being the reason given; by 7:15pm we had still not yet received our luggage. We went to see if we could get a progress report, and at the doorway of the ‘crew only’ area, we saw our bags sitting at the top on the trolley. We spoke to the two porters in charge of the trolley, and offered to take our own luggage which would have had the twofold effect of helping alleviate the porters’ workload, and convenience ourselves after an unacceptably lengthy waiting time. The porters had no problem with our request until a female crew officer appeared and ordered us out of the crew area (again I reiterate we were standing at the doorway of the passenger hallway), and instead of letting reason dictate, obstinately refused our request and demanded we remove ourselves from the vicinity of the ‘crew only’ area. We finally received our luggage at 8:00pm. Absolutely ridiculous behaviour, which was unnecessary and infuriating.

The entertainment was average, with the lounges providing several decent artists (piano and guitar mainly) however the theatre shows were very variable from pretty good to awful; especially the cost cutting last night “staff” show - ‘and now the ship’s crew are delighted to perform for your entertainment’ which ranged from not bad karaoke, singing, to embarrassingly poor ‘traditional’ dancing; and which was followed by the march past of officers and crew who took to the stage for their plaudits. Cheesy self-gratification or what!!

Again on the subject of the sanitisation measures, we were absolutely astonished when the entertainment staff, during the last act of the last show in the theatre, performed a routine which involved each of the 8 (I think) performers drinking water from a container, then spitting the water over the other members of the routine; in the middle of a contagious viral outbreak. What were they thinking about, why was it sanctioned, and did no one give any thought to the potential for spreading the virus; or perhaps NCL think it is only passengers who can catch the virus and that the crew were immune.

The ports of call were a real mixed bag; Casablanca was filthy, Agadir slightly better,. Funchal was lovely, Las Palmas also very nice, and Malaga, is a really interesting town and worth a visit anytime.

It wasn’t a bad cruise and we enjoyed the ship overall, but feel that the combative measures against the Norovirus thoroughly spoiled our experience. I realise that some of the measures were necessary, but on the other hand, I did not pay for a holiday to be treated like a schoolchild by staff, some of whom were over exuberant to the extreme in the administering of the anti-viral measures. It is the first time I have had a holiday where the remits of the staff were more important than the comfort and enjoyment of the paying customer.

Would we use NCL again? Maybe but only if there was no alternative.

I have just returned from the Eastern Med. on the Jade and despite scrupulously following all the advice given on board had a severe dose of the novovirus twice. I can truthfully say that I have never felt so ill and it was heartbreaking to miss tours to the places I had longed to see. When I did feel like eating again I would have welcomed my food being passed to me at the end of a pole by a waiter in full body armour if it would have protected me from further infection. I really resent the trivialisation of the sanitation measures which were in place, both in these online comments and worse, by fellow passengers and hold in particular contempt those passengers who ignored advice to stay in their cabins until the medical staff had given them the all clear thus spreading the virus around. I did not encounter any surly staff, on the contrary , they were unfailingly courteous and helpful despite the extra strain they must have been put under. I do agree that the "Fountains " act, while well done was very inappropriate to say the least.

Good Job we can all have a say, I dont think the OP was trivialising the sanitation measures, just saying it spoiled the experience

Spent Christmas on Norwegian Jade. We obviously had an outbreak of Norovirus (although we were never informed) as half way through the cruise the staff started serving us (very slowly) in the buffet restaurant. I agree about service - it was definitely the worst I have come across in all my years of cruising. To call many of the staff 'surly' is a bit too far, but there were many staff not far short of this. On the plus side, some staff were superb - but they were the exception rather than the rule. I have also never joined a ship and not been given guidance as to how to reach my cabin - but Jade did this!! Overall, very disappointing.

I think people have far to lax an attitude to hygene, strict measures are better than getting the bug.we cruise three or four times a year and have been on NCL twice with absolutely no complaints. my wife who is a nurse [older model] was trained in the RVH Belfast and very fussy about hygene, she generally wipes handles and so forth when we enter our stateroom avoiding contact where possible with any part of the the ship,I think its down to personal hygene on any ship.

YES we also were on the jade over Christmas & new year I totally agree about your comments with the food in the dining room always cold and some of the portions for the main course very small,we always went for early dinning around 6-30pm,sometimes the service was very slow, taking sometimes almost 2 hours to complete , apart from one occassion we werecomplete within 1 hour we had barely finished and rose from the table when a couple of waiters arrived and whipped off the table cover and had the table re set for the next guests, we also saw that show in the theatre spitting water at one another , where is the hygene here ,no wonder there were guests suffering from the novovirus, although on our trip I herd there were 30 down with the virus, but I agree every time you entered an eating area you were sprayed with this hand gell, and when we arrived back on ship after going into Alexandria they really did tighten up on hygiene, you wer not allowed to touch anything in the food eating areas it was all served by the waiters using tongs even for lifting the butter, WE also have been on many cruises before using various cruise companys, and I feel that the attitude of many members of the staff on the JADE left a lot to be desired, will we cruise again with N.C.L ???

I was also on this cruise and agree with every thing you you have said. It was also my first NCL, Although I enjoyed the cruise I will be sticking with RCI in future.

we travelled on the Jade in November. I do not have a problem with hand sanitation within reason. Everytime you go up to the counter they drench your hands, so by the time you have been up for food and again for a drink they do it three or four times. The food was cold before all the queues. If you asked for more (fries came in a portion of about ten) they made you feel like 'Oliver' and slopped it on your plate. Individual cereal boxes were opened and poured into bowls and ketchup was dispensed by staff. And we did not have the virus, we only entered Egypt. English fish and chips was a piece of battered fish and french fries! As for a comment posted regarding the formal dining rooms, in this country we don't get to eat outside very often, so I prefer to use the buffet. The Alizar and Grand were very nice but I found quite claustrophobic (we did have steak and french fries with a side portion of.. nothing! No onions, salad). Ship very nice, especially as they put up the Christmas decorations, cabins excellent, approved of the tea/coffee maker in cabin. Food cold, cold, cold!

Totally agree with all your comments especially regarding the opportunity to eat 'al fresco'. It is a very enjoyable part of our cruise experience. No tea/coffee maker in our cabin however. Nice touch if you can get it.
