Cruise Ship: Norwegian Gem Sailed: February, 2010
Destination: Caribbean Age: 46-55
Cabin: Inside Occasion: Annual/regular holiday
The ship (NCL GEM) was clean and spacious as where the cabins, we mainly dined in the Ocean Pacific and the service was excellent, the speciality restaurants on board seemed popular but these are becoming more expensive since my last NCL cruise around 2 years ago also their was no champagne to welcome you on board so costs are being cut - not even a chocolate on pillow. We faced delays getting into ocean pacific on two occassions but they give you a pager (what they don't tell you is that if you take the pager to the bar next door you get 2 half price cocktails), we found on both occassions that we were being paged as soon as drinks served and you may take these into restaurant. Wine and soft drinks were expensive but generally beer and cocktails were the same as in New York. We visited San Juan and would rate this 5/10, St Thomas which was very pretty - we took a small private tour costing 50 dollars for the two of us and the guide went out of his way to keep us informed - he even took photos of us 9/10, Antigua this I thought was very disappointing 3/10 the town was a bit of a dump and smelly, St Maarten quite nice but disappointed with island tour would have rather taken a short trip to beach for day with hindsight 6/10 and finally Tortola a very pretty island and nice beaches the island trip was good value with lunch included 8/10. The daytime entertainment on board was pretty boring unless you like Bingo (very very expensive) or gambling in casino, one thing you learn is freestyle cruising does not mean things cost nothing - even sporting activities like bowling have to be paid for. Evening entertainment was pretty good but surprised that their were only 3 show case shows on a 10 day cruise, the fun games in Spiniker lounge are worth attending - overall daytime entertainment 2/10 and evening 8/10 in my view. I was glad we booked a midship inside cabin at lower level as the crossing was quite rough in both directions for a couple of days and a lot of folk were feeling ill (even those who had cruised quite a lot) and of course like a pendulum the higher up the ship the more you rock or if you are right at front or at rear of vessel. All in all I found the staff on board this vessel to be some of the happiest I have ever seen - Overall I would rate the cruise 6/10 and I think if I was to take a cruise to Carribean I would start in Florida in future rather than New York, however, I did stay in New York for 5 days too as I had never visited the City before so the cruise broke up this trip to the hectic City.
Quality of Food4
The menus offered in Ocean Pacific were good and varied
Entertainment2
Enjoyed the showcase shows in theatres and fun game shos and parties and Kareoke in Spinniker lounge - least favourite was hopeless hypnotist who could hypnotise only 2 out of 10 people selected.
Shore Excursions3
Tortola island and beach combo was best as was private St Thomas tour - did not like Antigua at all.
Staff4
All staff were very good, very friendly and polite
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities1
Not much to do during the days (sea days) as weather was poor during three of these
