MSC Splendida – 19-29 December 2009
Embarcation in snowy Genoa after a ripoff taxi ride followed the usual pattern except that when we had filled out the normal forms, the girl behind the desk did not seem to be bothered to work, welcome us or direct us further. This was an obvious sign that things may not be as they should be.
Let us be positive. The cabins are quite spacious with HD television screens and are kept clean by conscientious and unfailingly polite cabin staff. There are ice buckets but there is no ice. If you phone up housekeeping they tell you either that they do not deliver ice or no ice is available for reasons connected with influenza. Since ice is freely available in drinks on board it simply appears like a cheapskate labour saving device. We dressed up our ice bucket with large white paper ears with “Ice?” marked on them prominently. Ice miraculously appeared, but we did not bother with that stratagem again.
The TV has about 20 channels on it. The French, Germans, Italians and Russians are well served since their channels include variety shows and films. The English language channels are confined to US business news channels, and after a while this palls. Yes, you can order movies at 9 Euros each, but that appears expensive especially since we had already seen most of them on Sky at home months previous – and without paying for Sky Box Office, too.
The library is small, rarely staffed and consists mainly of Italian paperback novels. There was a smattering of English paperbacks, but no factual or historical material. The cabin guide says the library is richly stocked – what a joke.
The breakfast buffet is vastly overcrowded, and it is usually difficult to find seating amongst the throng. I always have bacon and eggs for my cruise breakfast and am used to telling the cook exactly how I like my eggs. I do not like fried eggs sunny side up with the yolks runny. You have no choice on the Splendida: you serve yourself from the tray, and the choice is confined to runny eggs only. There are reconstituted watery fruit juices available: if you want real, fresh orange juice it will cost you 2 Euros 90.
The lunchtime buffet is similarly crowded and with little variation in food daily. If you find a seat invariably your food will be tepid or cold. If you want water it comes bottled at 2 Euros a bottle.
The night-time restaurant service is passable, and usually there is sufficient choice on the menu. On Christmas Day when we would normally expect a little extra effort the dinner choice was so appalling we decided to try the buffet. Unlike most other cruise ships, however, the buffet is of restricted choice – pizzas or kebabs, and you have to pay for each dish or side order. We ended up paying 60 Euros for a passable Tex-Mex meal in an empty, soulless speciality restaurant.
We love trivia – normally. There was trivia on board. There was an international team championship from which English people were apparently excluded – it was not featured on English language programmes. Most of the trivias otherwise were held in the disco, and supervised by Italian young men wearing comedic hats who thought it gave them licence to fool around during and between questions. For most trivia players quizzes are a serious sport. Invariably, the DJ insisted on playing loud music between questions, only turning it down moderately when the questions were being asked. The staff were also bad at time-keeping – the trivia often starting 10-15 minutes later than scheduled. The prizes were the usual ship’s tat except that each winning team only won one prize – a mousemat, or whatever.
The lifts were inadequate for the number of guests. They were quite difficult to operate so possession became important initially – people would, for instance, join a down lift in the hope of eventually going up. The children eventually mastered the controls and found ways of overriding the lift call button so that lifts would bypass those waiting to enter, and of pressing the close button so fast that people had no time to get in or were hurt by lift doors slamming hard together.
We had a decent sized balcony. The only problem is that even with a modest breeze it sounds like a hurricane outside. The ship met some heavy weather and it did not seem to take it well – maybe because of the banshee like screaming from the wind. I would not like to be on this ship on the Hawaii run. Some modern ships look far too top-heavy – this one included.
No alcoholic drinks were allowed to be brought on board so we were subject to high monopoly prices on board. One French lady wanted to bring on a bottle of champagne for her birthday – request refused. You could not even bring a bottle on board and pay corkage at table. Azamara don’t mind the occasional bottle of wine coming on board – and, I think that lines like this deserve praise and the penny-pinching lines deserve boycotting. If everyone did this then the policies would become more flexible. So, that’s our view of MSC – not designed for the English market, televisually deprived, mass-market, overcrowded, overpriced on board for each and every extra (ice cream 4 Euros etc), and mean on booze. Deserves a boycott.
Quality of Food1
The buffet food was inadequate, in crowded company, often cold and without enough places to sit
Entertainment1
A comedian trying to tell jokes in five languages rapidly becomes tiresome
Shore Excursions2
The Egyptian excursions are all too often attempts to sell wares - papyrus etc
Staff1
The trivia staff were rude and poor at time-keeping
Children's Facilities2
Almost too much freedom - son 15 coming back after 3am every night - stopout
Onboard Activities1
Inadequate trivia poorly delivered; no enrichmentprogramme of any kind
Cabins4
Spacious and clean but howling under light breeze

Mr. Butler, we were on the same cruise as you and I have already posted a review. I agree with your review. We ate mostly in the formal dinning rooms. Every time we passed by the Tex-Mex restaurant, it was empty. That said it all, so I did not think that it was was worth to pay to have a meal in there.

Sorry to see, your MSC Splendida cruise experience was as BAD, if not slightly worse than the MSC RUINED cruise I had over Christmas, (See "MSC Splendida, Disembarkation was the best Bit" Review) so you are not alone in feeling MSC CRUISES need a boycott or avoided at the very least. The food was not very good, even in the main dinning rooms, usually not hot only warm and often also undercooked (e.g. pasta, rice and meat), so you did not miss much. As MSC clearly market their cruises in England and other English speaking countries, with their Glossy Information Book and rose tinted glasses. They should at the very least try and cater for an English speaking market, who after paying, often 1000's for this cruise, expecting and hoping for a complimentary glass water or tea to be included at meals. SO remember after reading the sales pitch, DO NOT assume anything on a MSC cruise, the organization means if it can go wrong it will, and if you thought it was included its NOT.

What a pity you did not enjoy your cruise. I think you will find however that breakfast buffets are often crowded. We have cruised with a number of different lines and have encountered similar problems on many of them both at breakfast and lunch. You can often avoid the worst of the crowds with judicious timing or, as Bosscat suggests, eat in the main dining room. Also, I'm not surprised that the library stocked mainly Italian books as this is an Italian cruise line!! If you cruise with a British or American line, you are unlikely to find many Italian titles. We have been with both Costa and MSC and have enjoyed all our cruises. Indeed, we have booked two cruises with MSC this year.

i am with you here totally. we had two msc's last year and are going costa in april i think brits do have to accept they are advertised as mainly italian cruise lines. we used the restaurant when the buffet was busy and its bound to be with 3000 passengers on board. and i find most cruise lines have this problem.

Buffets on all ships certainly are usually crowded - I threw a huge, mincing hissy-fit aboard a Celebrity ship once because I'd walked 3 full circuits of the buffet clutching my now-cold lunch. My partner waited until I'd finished ranting and then said, 'NOW shall we go to the main dining room?' We did, it was beautifully calm, civilised and the maitre D' brought me a large glass of wine when he heard the story!

Not a particularly apt comment considering the Butlers have at least ten cruises to their name and indeed that could be in excess of 50. They obviously didn't like the practice and presentation of this cruise and many of us find this useful information. Whilst it may not have been ideal for them others will find it admirable. ....Neil

they do advertise themselves as italian line and do cater for continentals more than brits. it you dont like continental you wont like msc or costa. we did 2 msc cruises last year and both we brilliant. we had a great time on both. good food, great staff, lovely clean ships. yes places were crowded but on a big ship its bound to be that way. we too used the restaurant as bosscat suggests. we are going costa in april and have read some bad reviews on them too but been advised to have an open mind and we will enjoy it. here's hoping
