We started our cruise in Genoa and could hardly wait to board the beautiful MSC Sinfonia for a 21 day cruise to Durban in S.Africa. Well, we waited in line for almost 4hours, the most shambolic check-in we have experienced in over 25 cruises. The security photos showed tight-lipped, angry faces, a testament to the general feeling of disgust at the amateurish way in which we were treated. Surely, things could only get better --- and they did! The ship's decor was minimalistic but elegant and everywhere was spotless, in fact the cleanest ship we've sailed on by far. The food was always excellent and very varied and the waiters always happy to accomodate any special requests. This was a positioning cruise so the theatre entertainment was probably different to a regular cruise, but was very good, particularly if most of the passengers liked classical music, as seemed to be the case. However, the 'stars' of the cruise were the entertainment team -- a feature on MSC cruises. Their enthusiasm, friendly and hardworking manner was great to see and they made a point of trying to get to know as many passengers as possible. The highlight of their efforts was the deck party for the crossing of the equator, something we'll always remember; it was fantastic to see so many passengers letting their hair down and having a ball. That's what a holiday is all about!
So, from a dreadful start, all turned out well, with good destinations too.

It was good to read your positive review. We are also on a repositioning cruise Durban to Genoa end of March. This is something we have never done before. Have you any hints & tips.please ? I feel we are going on a bit of a mystery cruise.

Hi, What was your opinion of Durban, i believe it is very dangerous to walk in the streets after dark? did you go on any excursions there? We are planning to cruise there when the world cup is on.
Answer by Mike Appleby, Durban, South Africa (19 Feb 10 06:44) to a QUESTION by Bolton (18 Feb 10 16:23)
Hi, I live in Durban. As with all cities everywhere in the world there are always areas you might want to stay clear of. However generally Durban is safe, the beachfront is just about to complete a huge redevelopment and will be spectacular and safe even at night. The main restaurant areas are also safe. My parents are in their 70s and walk to and from the cinemas at night with no problem. The main City centre is a commercial office district thus is empty at night and therefore I would avoid at night. Obviously you will not be walking around any of the townships at night. The new stadium (ready for our Olympic bid for 2020 !) is stunning, take the skycar to the top of the arch. As with all cities in any country etc, as a tourist take simple precautions don't make yourself a target by carrying obviously expensive huge cameras, jewelery etc. While SA does have a crime problem the chances of overseas visitors to Durban experiencing them is very very very small and the issue is blown out of all proportion by overseas press. Given past history you are more likely to hit on the head with an empty beer bottle by an English football fan !
