We had the pleasure of a one night 'preview' stay on board the Magnifica during the UK trade showcase in Southampton. Having sailed on three of the MSC vessels I had a fair idea of what to expect - we were not disappointed.
The ship's interior decor was typically MSC - stylish / Italian with marble, mirrors and illuminated staircases in abundance.
The Sahara 'casual dining' ambience presented a more sophisticated dining atmosphere than we've experienced on previous MSC ships - however this wasn't a full blown cruise. It was a one-night sampler and whilst there were a few minor teething troubles at dinner (L'Edera Restaurant) I feel sure that these will be easily overcome.
The food was good - not 5star by any means - but quite acceptable. Wines were also very good.
Attention from MSC staff in general was superb - our only 'hassle' being one Italian waiter who simply couldnt get the hang of our coffee preferences - a minor detail.
We had a balcony cabin which was tastefully furnished and fitted with reasonable/good wardrobe space. The beds were comfortable with mattresses a bit on the firm side.
All the public circulation areas felt comfortable and spacious - however the fact that this ocassion was effectively a trade conference, the flow of 'guests' seemed somewhat unreal compared to a normal cruise.
The Italian tolerance of smokers still prevails - hence we avoided certain areas - but this would not be a serious deterrent As we didnt quite have the weather for swimming and sunbathing it was dufficult to get a true feel for the various pool areas - however the design of both the covered pool (removable roof) anf the external pool were very inviting - and would no doubt look even nicer under caribbean sunshine!
The theatre was spectacular - never seen so much lighting and imaginative decor / design. We were treated to a 45minute show of a very high calibre - very enjoyable.
All the bars and lounges were comfortable, contemporary and the Tiger Bar in particular used some stunning design.
Our overall impression was very positive. A beautiful ship, well designed and presented - thank you MSC for the invite - much appreciated and enjoyed.

Question by Spiteri, Gibraltar (29 Jun 10 08:18) about this REVIEW
I am cruising in msc magnifica on 11 september together with my family 6 adults and 2 children, I am rather concerned with the food aspect, as I have cruised with royal carribean, princess, pulmantur, celebrity, P & O therefore I am a regular cruiser. Is there alternative lunch in the poolside area as in other ships, if you miss the lunch because you are on a tour and get back late. I am concerned because of the children (ages 1 and 3)

I totally agree I was on this beautifil ship at the same time as you, I sampled most of the bars and was surprised that so many allowed smoking but i soon got over that. The food in the Sahara at breakfast and lunch was great too.
