We went to Sint-Petersburg on the MSC Lirica in July 2009 as first-time cruisers. We boarded in Amsterdam. From the first moment we stepped aboard, we loved the ship. Directly we were guided to our cabin by a cabin attendant. The cabin was not quite big, but there was room enough for the four of us and our luggage. As you compare with a ferry, it's big! Out of our cabin we had a wonderful oceanview. Within an hour our luggage was delivered. Every day a basket of fruit was in our cabin.
Everything onboard was very clean and charming as well. We like the style used, either Italian and international. We used the 'Blue club disco' the most as a lounge for the day which offers you a wonderful view over the ocean at three walls. The others were located on the lower decks. They all had there own style.
The food was good, not great. Breakfast and lunch were offered both as a buffet and à la carte. The lunchbuffet was open from 12:00 to 19:00 so you could eat whenever you wanted to. Dining was à la carte, the waiters were always in a hurry but very friendly. The food had potentional on the menu, but was mostly a slight disappointment on a plate. But maybe that's because I expected a Michelin-kitchen after the whole ship experience. But there was always enough for you, and if you like for example three desserts you'll get them. The food was mostly Italian, not only pizza and pasta but real Italian food. But if you don't like it for some reason you could order fries or so.
The shows, which were performed every day, were not always as good as you would have wished. But the dancing was great. The rest of the activities and entertainment was performed by the entertainment team. They were good, always busy entertaining you. Just a small note: don't expect very spectacular things.
We took three excursions, all in Sint-Petersburg. In just one word: great!
The only 'real' dissapointment for us, especially our son, was that in the brochure they talked about a 'jogging track'. But it was a space outside where everyone wanderd from and to the back of the ship, and there where stairs! This may not be dramatic when you jog there, but our son runs, like sprinting. You can't practise that when there are too many people.
However, we had a wonderful cruise with MSC.
