MSC NOT ALL THAT !!!

Cabin: Balcony Occasion: Birthday
I looked for about 3 weeks at quite a few opitions and when the bad weather came in early Jan we booked the cruise because of the ports of call. The only worrying thing for me was that It was Itilian ship as we have travelled on one before , Costa Victoria in 2002, we had a great cruise due to the people on our table, but it appeared to me that the English speaking people were treated preety poor.

Let me start at the check in which was very smooth and quick and before we knew it we were in our cabin. 9/10
The cabin was well equiped and layed out and great bed with a great balcony. 9/10
We had a quick look around the ship and it looked fine with plenty of bars etc. 9/10
We , as usual, went to the dining room to see were ourtable was ans to make sure our table had english speaking people on our table and that was fine. Now not being pickey but the dining was bland and did not have that or by any means any WOW factor as most of the other ships we have been on have had , RC and Celebrity , so we have been in great dining rooms and then we found ourselves comparing what we have seen before and then things did not look that great.

You could not fault how clean the ship was and how many staff were about but the crew , the Italians , were rude and would look down if you were in the lift so they did not have to speak to us!!

The first night in the dining room was not good as the food quality was below the standard we were expecting. 5/10

There were now quite a few things that were really getting to me , namely the Italians, so I will give you a couple of things that would get to anyone on holiday. There was a football match on in the sports bar , which was a great bar and loads on TVs in it , in was between Man Utd and AC Malian, the room was full and I found it had to find a seat and there was around 50 to 70 in the bar and I was the only one with a drink in there!!!!! The staff told me they never drink and will sit around with a bottle of water between about 6 or 7 of them, unbeleiveable !!!!! Thos happened all over the ship and in every bar on the ship that I went in. I could go on and on but you get where I am coming from.

Now to the staff in the bars. I found out when we were on the ship that there was a charge of 6 euros p/p per night which worked out at 132 for us. Now when you have staff that serve you it is nice to reward good service so this put a stop to this and when I ask why I was told " because the majority of cruisers were Italian and they dont tip enough the company brought this rule in " Now I quiestion did they get it all as I worked out that as the ship was full they collected 215000 euros, so do they give it all to the staff??? Back to the staff in the bars when you walked in they seemed to follow you to were you were sitting and stood waiting for you to order a drink , and I later found out as the waiters in the bars got a 15% charge /tip on what you spent so as our bar bill was 1089 euros they did well out of us!!!

Most of you will want to know about the prices of drinks well here are the facts, Large beer 4.80 small beer 2.90, G&T 6.90 soft drink 2.80 and water 1.90 all euros. You can also buy packs for Beers and wine and water which save you a few euros, now you can make your own mind on if you think if its cheap or not!

I could go on and on but I would just sound like we did not have agood time but we did in spite of a few things.

I will just leave you with this , we were in the airport waiting to check in and the couple behind us started talking to us , they were about 60 and they asked us if we had enjoyed the cruise we told them a few things and they agreed 100% in what we were saying but added that there was no tea or coffee in the cabins , I forgot this , and no water on the dining room table and no tea or coffee after your meal , so we had a good laugh untill they asked us about a port of call that we did not stop a on our ship and it turned out that they were on a different ship , Costa Serena, so we were moaning about the same things but on diferent ships !!!!!!!!!

I had no problems speaking with the Italian staff whatsoever. If you smile at people they will usually smile back! Also, Italians do not generally sit around drinking. If they drink at all it is usually with their dinner. If you expect the bar to be full of people drinking all evening then you should stick to British cruiselines. This is the very reason that I always travel on MSC.

comment-The staff told me they never drink and will sit around with a bottle of water between about 6 or 7 of them, unbeleiveable !!!!! they are just as entitled to sit in the bars as you are. not everyone needs to drink alcohol-the italians don\'t have the british attitude towards booze.

I think you have missed the point Crowther was making, that is was hard to find a seat, due to overcrowding for one reason or another, in every bar on the ship.

\"Another Brit Complaining about Italians behaving like Italians\" now that quote is dismissive to the point of being rude and in my opion is a feeble excuse that many use here to justify the poor service reported in reviews about MSC Cruses. .... I happen to think the review that Crowther posted is an honest and fair report, which happens to be very similar to my own experiences with MSC.

Review does not mention poor service, in fact it says that the cabin staff and dining room were \'brill\'! We had no poor service on our MSC cruise either. And it certainly clearly is a review complaining about the Italians behaving like Italians. Why do people go on Italian ships and then seem to be surprised to find it isn\'t P & O? If you stay in an Italian hotel, do you expect it to be the same as one in Margate? I presume the people who complain have never holidayed in Italy.

Maybe you missed in the review where it stated ("the crew , the Italians , were rude ...") If you found rude staff (crew) on a cruise, would you not want to warn others? .... Or is this something you find normal on a Italian or Margate holiday, hence you find the rude staff attitude reported in the review. acceptable as its a Italian/MSC cruise? .... I do not and many others don't like rudeness, even on P&O cruises.

I do not generally have anything to do with the crew of a cruise ship other than the cabin and dining room staff, so cannot see the problem! In the bars they seem to be complaining that the service was too good! There is no mention of any specific problem with any crew member. I think problems arise with people who have not travelled much and are unable to cope with different cultures. To us, it was like being on holiday in Italy, so we enjoyed it. Others feel safer travelling on an all British ship and if so, are best advised to do so and not leave their comfort zone.

I feel I need to put this issue of bad service and rude staff to bed. Firstly the rude staff were not the watiers or staff in the dining or staff that attended our cabin it was the rest of the " staff " eg the ships officers how would put their heqads down and not make eye contact with you so as not to strike and conversation with you , now as I have stated before we are well travelled and have been on holiday many times to Italy and have never had a problem before nor on any other ship in this area. I think when you walk towards a crew member they should smile at you or say hello at least and that should be a min requirement. As for the service being bad too good what I think most people have misunderstood is that when other people are not drinking and the waiters are working on commission they seemed to hover in your direction and wait for you to nearly finish your drink and then come over and pick your glass up and then ask you if you want another drink, now thats not good service or bad it just made me feel uneasy with them thats all and I am sure most other people would also. Now I hope this clears the matters up once and for all.

Yet another complaint about the lack of tea and coffee. Next time, read the reviews before you book anything and then you will know what to expect! You got a 5 course meal, but no coffee afterwards. On Royal Caribbean, you get 3 courses plus coffee. Swings and roundabouts! Very few cruise ships have teamaking facilities in the cabins. The American lines are just beginning to introduce it. Just order room service in the morning for your wake-up cuppa. We thorougly enjoyed MSC Splendida. (It is also best to find out about the tipping policy before you go, if it is important to you)

My first 3 cruises were with MSC and remembering the fun we had with Italian guests - with whom we made the effort to speak in our simple Italian (possibly the easiest of all European languages) - still makes me smile today. I also love the food on MSC, especially the daily, different freshly made pastas and risottos. Quanto una crociera costa con il MSC? Non molto affatto!
