We are a couple in our late 20s and this was our 5th cruise in total, 3rd with MSC. We have previously cruised with Celebrity and Royal Caribbean but prefer MSC for the great value and European vibe.
Our embarkation at Venice was smooth. The check in area was busy but the queues moved very quickly and it wasn’t long before we were boarding the beautiful MSC Divina.
Our first impression was that the ship was almost identical to the Splendida which we’d been on last year but the décor is even nicer with a nice silver finish on the stairs in the main lobby compared to the gold of the Splendida. Our cabin was not ready but we went to the buffet and explored the ship until it was. We did feel the massive size of the Divina and the ship was fully sold out which was also noticeable around the pool and other popular areas that often got very crowded.
We had an inside cabin which had good storage and a spacious bathroom. The bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in and it was easy to control the room temperature. Our cabin attendant was very friendly and did a great job cleaning our room all week.
We like cruises mainly for how sociable they are and this cruise was no exception. We had table of 8 at the 9pm dinner. We had great fun all week with our fellow dinner friends and we often met up with them during the day for poolside cocktails. We found the food great in the dining room every night and our waiters were top class. The buffet food was also very good although it did get busy at times- a good trick is to go to the very back of the buffet as it is quietest there.
Our favourite bar was the garden bar at the back of the ship on the pool deck though it was very popular and was often busy. Bar service was not especially fast but it was fine. The drinks package is excellent value and even though only one of us was drinking alcohol we still felt it was worthwhile: it’s surprising how the teas, coffees, waters and soft drinks can add up.
At Bari we saw very little, we just went for a short walk from the ship.
At Katakolon we had pre-booked a taxi to take us to a vineyard and a beach. The port is very nice with some nice cafés and shops so it would even be nice to just get off and stay around the port.
We did not get off in Izmir but fellow cruisers said they enjoyed the trip to Ephesus.
We were unlucky to be in Istanbul on May Day where there were riots. We decided not to venture too far and got back and admired the hills and mosques of Istanbul from the top deck of the ship.
Dubrovnik was probably our favourite day. Don’t pay for the MSC bus, it’s cheaper for even two people to get a taxi. We walked from the port to the old town, it’s a nice walk. The old town is beautiful to wander around.
Overall this was another great value MSC cruise. MSC cannot be beaten for the best value in cruising.
