13-20th september. This was our first ever cruise and was a last minute deal. We were recommended Island cruises but would not cruise with them again, largely due to the poor food quality. The best dining was in the Steakhouse restaurant. The Oasis would have been more enjoyable, except the air conditioning broke down on the last evening of our cruise and so we were very uncomfortable in the Oasis restaurant.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The entertainment team were a bit hi de hi. The best entertainment was in the theatre and Jongleurs. The smoking in every bar and club, except the theatre got on our nerves as we are non smokers. People ignored the no-smoking sections around the pool and the staff said nothing.
The journey from Palma to Livorno was very rough. Chairs were flying off the sun deck, bottles and glasses off the pool bar area. I was very ill, but it hasn't totally put us off cruising.
Other passengers told us that they had cruised with other cruise companies such as Thomson were the food and entertainment were better, so we are looking forward to trying other cruise companies. We have two cruises booked next year with P & O, Ventura and Thomson Spirit, so we will be able to compare a little better then.
On the whole we had an enjoyable week, apart from the food. I lost 6lbs during the week, which is usually not standard for a cruise.
Quality of Food1
Steakhouse great. Oasis good. Reminder average at best.
Entertainment3
Generally good. Jongleurs was excellent. The theatre shows were very good, especially the musicals and sinatra show. Only down side was the smoky atmosphere in every pub and club area, except the theatre.
Shore Excursionsn/a
Did our own thing - too expensive.
Staff5
Excellent staff
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Very good.
Cabins3
Clean and tidy. No fridge which was bizarre.

I was on the same cruise date as yourself and I do not agree about the food. I probably lost a few pounds (which I needed too) but that was because I had lots of salads, fruit, veg and other lovely food. I do think by the end of the week the food did get a bit too much of the same, but there wasn't anything wrong it IMO. I also don't agree about the entertainment. I thought MOST were pretty good! I did think the Jongleurs were really terrible!! The sunbeds/chairs flying around was scary, we soon went back inside, although alot of others didn't, they were braver than us!

Looking at your age would'nt Royal caribbean suit you better than Thompsons especially as their ships are so elderley. Look up the Berlitz reviews on this site.

Sorry but I was also on this cruise and feel your comments are exagerated at best. The journey from Palma to Livorno was certainly rough, and I spent some of it on the pool deck but cannot recall chairs flying off the sun deck or anywhere else. Nor did I see any glasses or bottles flying off bars. Maybe that happened when you were sleeping, or dreaming. I found the food to be very good especially the theme nights and ate in the Oasis and Steakhouse as well The Island restaurant was always very busy, which you don`t get when the food is only average. I have cruised Thomson Spirit and Thomson destiny and can assure you that Island Star is by far a superior experience.

The OP wasn't sleeping/dreaming, one of the sunbeds smashed into several pieces and the other chairs did have a mind of their own. You must have been one of the sensible ones and stayed inside :-).

Hi. I wasn`t that brave either and went back inside after an hour or so. As I said I certainly never saw anything flying around but a lady told us the following day that a sun lounger had been found in the pool, not the most pleasant experience if you happened to be in there at the time
Opinion: Agree Comment by Butler, Stourbridge (17 Oct 08 17:48) about this REVIEW
Totally agree with you about food quality - very poor. Also, very smoky in all bars so just 1 no-smoking bar would have been greatly appreciated. Entertainent average, although Stars own singers/dancers worked hard and were better than the 'guest' acts. Staff cannot do enough for you, worked hard, particularly cabin stewards who kept everything clean & tidy all the time. We have cruised twice before with Thomson, and found the whole package much better, food had more choice & was of a better quality, entertainment more 'polished', just generally a step up in standards all round. Had cabin on deck 10 with balcony, but suffered with noise from next door neighbour and smoke drifting up from decks below unfortunately. Ship was fully booked so just had to 'grin & bear it'. Realise Island & Thomson all come under the Tui umbrella, but the Thomson cruises are much better and we would sail with them anytime, but not with Island. Excursions were on the pricey side and could be done under own steam for a lot less, even though we did go on one of the organised tours due to me being in a wheelchair and not too confident in doing our own thing with disability.
