A friend had told us that the Island Escape needed refurbishing before we went on this cruise so we knew what to expect. We simply wanted an inexpensive break away from the snow. The cabin was small but had plenty of storage space. The shower room was definitely ready for updating. It just looked awful - the terracotta coloured wash basin and the dirty grouting in the shower had both seen better days. However we were told the ship was to be refurbished in November 2010.
Unless you paid extra the food was all served buffet style in both main restaurants. Due to a previous bout of novovirus the staff served you and staff made sure you used the hand gel. You could pay extra to dine in a restaurant with waiter service but we didn't.
The entertainment was excellent. There was a Frank Sinatra tribute act who was good and a motown singer who was excellent. The theatre group produced excellent lively shows and two of their singers were trained opera singers.
We took a trip to Taroudant in Morocco, a scenic tour in Madeira and tour of the north of Lanzarote all of which were interesting and well organised. At the other ports we wandered around ourselves which we also enjoyed.
There was no dress code but some people chose to dress up a bit more in the evenings.
The shop prices and drinks prices were reasonable.
The staff were excellent - really friendly and helpful. Tips were included in the price of the cruise.

the food was not that bad, or the cabins. when i came off off that ship on the 30 sep.2010 they said it was the last trip as it was going in for a refit, but i see on the holiday broshure that it is still going down to the canairies untill may. before we came off the staff were overjoyed because they said they would be having 6 months off due to this refit.

My elderly mother and I went on the Spirit of the Med cruise in September 2010. We had a great holiday and would agree entirely with the on line review. Although the cabins need a refit the rest of the experience made up for this with the friendly staff and the excellent food and the faultless organisation.
