Following three days in Rio de Janerio we boarded the Veendam for what turned out to be a holiday beyond expectations. Unfortunately the ship had experienced an outbreak of GI and our embarkation took longer than expected, however, once on, our cabin was well appointed and spacious. The Veendam is spacious and at no time did we feel crowded, they even try to eliminate the problem of people hogging the sunbeds, although of course, some still try! The restaurants were well staffed and the food excellent. The entertainment was of a particularly high standard, with two crew evenings. We did our own excersions, mostly because the ships were very expensive, and in general felt that by doing so we did not miss out, especially as there were excellent shore information lectures before each port of call. It is difficult to put into words exactly what Antartica was like as it was so very special - probably one of the most wonderful places we have ever visited, certainly a priviledge to have seen. The ship carried an ice pilot and a couple of very knowledgeable lecturers who made the experience even more interesting. Some scientists from one of the bases in Antartica also boarded and gave a short information session. Although the GI virus reappeared we both feel that the crew did everything in their power to eradicate it, working extremely long hours. Just one downside, the drinks were quite expensive, making even buying a bottle of wine with the meals, a no no. When we cruise again we will most certaining put Holland America on our list.
