have just sailed on ms veendam to south america.ship is excellent even though it is quite old it has been refurbished to a high standard.staff on board are some of the friendliest of any ship we have sailed on.we were celebrateing my 60th birthday and wanted to do something special.the highlights were visiting port stanley in the falklands, rounding cape horn in unusually calm seas and sailing through the chilean fiords.the ports of call enabled us to visit penguin colonies at close quarters.I can recommend this cruise to any age group because there is always something to do on board even on the many sea days.
Quality of Food
amazing steak in rotterdam dining room. breakfast and lunch was very good in Lido self service dining room.
Entertainment
veendam orchestra and guitarist Justin Miller excellent. Magician not very good and very repetative.
Shore Excursions
the only excursion we did from the ship was the tango show in buenos aires. whilst the show very good the meal we had with the show was inedible. the steak was fatty and not cooked when we asked for well done.
Staff
all the staff were wonderful and it would be unfair to single any of them out as they all did a splendid job.

Onboard Activities
although this ship is quite small there was always plenty going on and in the evenings there were lots of little corners with different musical entertainments to suit everybodys tastes and things going on in the Crows Nest on the top deck.
Cabins
outside cabin was allocated on arrival and was very spacious and quiet and the beds were very comfortable enabling us to have a good nights rest. the bathroom was roomy and came with a bath and bathrobes.also we were allocated midship so there was very little movement when the sea was a bit choppy.

In total agreement. We did the same cruise on the Amsterdam last year and found the ship and the cruise wonderful. Of interest to note that we too had very calm seas around the Horn.
HAL service was excellent.
With regard to money: in the Falklands the GB pound is fine. And credit and debit cards are accepted widely in SA. Like Morris of Trowbridge, we had some local currency as well as US dollars. Don't bother with travellers cheques. Where you can cash these, you will be charged heavily for the privelege.
Hope all this helps. Enjoy your ruise.
On the Amsterdam they were happy for us to bring local wines on board - there is a small charge for corkage. This enabled us to discover the lovely wines of Uruguay as well as sampling some gorgeous chilean wines.

We are taking the same trip in two weeks. Please let me know if you used local currency in Chile, Argentina and Urguary or were US $ generally accepted.
Appreciate your help.

We are British and are considering doing this type of cruise on Veendam one winter and wonder if you had to book your flights separately and at what cost? Did the price come with the flights prebooked and may we ask who with? Many thanks................. Carole

We have just booked this cruise for next November. We shopped around and the cheapest we came up with was through Thomas Cook. Their price was at least a couple of hundred pounds less than others and in most cases £500. All far cheaper than doing it ourselves!

Dear Carole in reply to your question we did book the package with flights. I looked at doing it ourselves but it was going to be more expensive and you also get the backup of a cruise agent if anything goes wrong. We did get a very good deal as we arrived home 2 days before xmas which is not very popular with a lot of people. We flew with TAM airlines to Sao Paulo with an onward 40 minute flight to Rio and our agent got a good deal of 1500 pounds each.We booked it last July for 4th December so it pays to keep your eyes open and ring around different agents We booked with coop future travel. Hope you do get to go as it is a once in a life time adventure. Best wishes, Joyce.
