Holland America v Celebrity Caribbean Cruises

In December 09 we embarked on our second caribbean cruise, this time with Holland America. The Noordam compared favourably with the Celebrity Constellation which we travelled on the previous year. Holland America came out on top with regard to the overall quality of service and enthusiasm of the staff, and in particular the flexibility of the main dining arrangements where we were able to get a table for 2 on every night we requested one. We were disappointed that the spa pool was not free of charge as on celebrity, and the onboard bars lacked the finesse of the celebrity product. We did however really enjoy the traditional teak wrap-around promenade deck, with its wooden lounge chairs, and were impressed by the facilities on offer in the New York Times sponsored Exploration Cafe. The ports of call on our Celebrity cruise included our favourite islands of St Thomas and St Martin, but we enjoyed Holland America's private island (Half Moon Cay). Staterooms on both ships were of similar quality, but Celebrity had the edge on in-room dining. The disembarkation process on our Holland America cruise was more efficient than the one on Celebrity. We had 2 great holidays and wouldn't hesitate to travel with either cruise line again in the future, but overall Celebrity came out on top with a more polished cruising product. We are looking forward to our next cruise which is going to be on one of the new Celebrity Solistice class ships.

A very useful comparative discussion - thanks for that. I've done a number of Celebrity cruises but not HAL so far and have often thought of trying them.
