Normally cruise on P+O when thetre is a choice, but Holland America offered an autumn 7 day cruise starting in Mopntreal. OPur shceduled flighjts wre later than expected restricting our time in Montreal and the hotel was on great shakes booked by the cruiseline. Montreal immigration was hideous, worthy of so many bad USA experiences.
Once on Maasdam we were impressed. Built in 1993 there were signs of her age, but the ship was very classy. The cabin was very spacious and comfortable, though it lacked a fridge and tea/cofffee making facilities. Open dining was a total flop with lnog delays so we opted for 8pm second sitting with two wonderful waiters, Aspen and Bayu. The food in general was very good, the speciality Pinnacle Grill we used once and the steaks were giagantic.
If we didn't take to Montreal much we loved Quebec, though our day tour endeded in total chaos waiwiting for a repalcement bus. Chjarlottetown on Prince Edward Island was terrific, and we enjoyed Sydney and Halifax with Peggy's Cove and sonme of the Titanic graves. Avoid the Halifax hop on hop off bus, its very poor.
The on the boat imigration for Bar Harbour was quite smooth and deespite fog around the ship the sun was out most everywhere else. And Boston is a lovely city where we added two nights.
The entertainment varied, most was poor though a show called Encore was marvellous. And the post cruise hotel in Boston was excellent, a Fairmont.
The staff were almosat all great and I didn't mind the $11 a day hotel charge. I did and do mind the American 1`5% on drinks, and the early morning check, before waking on disembarkation day, on soft drinks left in the cabin which we had not touched.
It saved crossing the atlantic both ways on P+O on what would have been a 5 week cruise, so the Holland America experience was generally very good.

| Quality of Food | |
| Main restaurant, used the Pinnacle Grill once | | Entertainment | |
| Poor apart from the Encore show | | Shore Excursions | |
| Quebec good until a shambolic last hour waiting for a replacement bus when we could have looekd around. Charlottetowen did two tours and the hippo duck on land and in the water was great. | | Staff | |
| Our waiters and cabin steward. | | Children's Facilities | n/a |
| | Onboard Activities | |
| Yes, good films. The stage shows were generally too old in terms of material except Encore. | | Cabins | |
| Although inside the space, even bathroom were superb. A fridge and coffee making facilities would have been good. In cabin DVD players allowed us to watch a film, a Dusty Springield DVD and listen to music CD's - that is an inexpensivew but winning touch. | | Overall Rating | |
