Up the Amazon ... without a paddle

This was our first cruise and on the whole we certainly enjoyed it. For us it was all about the destination - the Amazon - and the cruise line/boat was not our main concern when we booked. With only a handful of ships actually doing this cruise we went with whoever we could get and that happened to be Fred Olsen & Braemar. I thought the staff on the boat were excellent and it was almost embarrassing to see how hard they worked, without a day off and as we found out for so little pay. The destination was superb and the only draw back to that was that we didn’t spend longer in the Amazon. The food was great and the service in the Thistle restaurant was very good.

The down sides from our point of view were that it was quite clear this was a more mature person's ship and cruise line. We've got no problem with that in itself but it did make it hard when travelling with 2 young children (5 & 7) because there was very little for them to do. It meant that I had to spend 5 hours a day holed up in the play room (luckily there is one!) because it was so hot I had to keep the kids out of the sun for most of the day. A bit more night life after 11 o'clock might have been good as well!

There was however one incident that did spoil the holiday for us. My wife and youngest daughter were confined to cabin for 2 days on doctor’s orders after she apparently diagnosed them with the dreaded "gastro". This was a complete over reaction as they had absolutely no symptoms of any illness apart from an upset stomach. In addition the doctor bizarrely allowed myself and my other daughter (we remained perfectly healthy throughout) to roam about the ship during this period even though we were all sharing a very small inside cabin. The Nora virus is incredibly contagious and there would just have been no way we could have got away with not getting it considering the cabin size. Surely if the objective was to contain an outbreak of Nora virus this just didn't make any sense. We were very upset by the whole incident which in my opinion was handled without much common sense or sympathy by the medical staff. My wife has a long term illness and this really did upset her.

Overall we were able to put the incident with the p**h police behind us and enjoy the Amazon and the experience. If your after a certain type of holiday (relaxing, quiet, good service and food) then this ship is great. If you’re travelling with a family or after a bit more "action" then this ship probably isn't for you, unless like us it was all about the destination.
Quality of Food4
Thistle restaurant - lovely staff!
Entertainment2
Surprised by how many entertainers there were on a small ship...preferred the coral club to the very cramped Neptune lounge.
Shore Excursions4
The festival at Boi Bumba was brilliant and its worth going for this alone.
Staff4
Very friendly in the Thistle restaurant. Deserve every penny they get in tips!
Children's Facilities2
Being generous here - the ship just is n't really for children but we found enough to do (just) and there is a playroom. All the staff were very friendly towards them which was lovely.
Onboard Activities2
See above.
Cabins1
Very small cabin. OK the size is in the brochure but it was a tight squeeze (especially if you get confined to cabin for 2 days).

Opinion: Disagree Comment by Hughes, London (13 Mar 10 00:13) about this REVIEW
As a cruise ship doctor for another company I feel I should stand up for the medical dept on this ship. The medical dept were probably simply following a highly defined policy on gastroenteritis. Once you reported they had no choice. If you poor wife and daughter met the criteria for confinement, and believe me i'm sure the medics in no way wanted to spoil your holiday, they have to follow the policy and confine. Most people never think they have Noro when they often do. Some people have it very mildly, some severe so if you get diarrhoea/vomiting on a ship you must do the sensible thing. An large outbreak on a ship is a disaster. The reason that most companies do not confine cabin mates any longer is that the latest evidence shows that asymptomatic cabin mates are no more likely to spread the virus around as long as they maintain strict hygiene. If the cabin mates develop the symptoms which they may or may not, then they must be confined too. I fee sorry for your family but unfortunately it has to be accepted that if you get diarrhoea /loose motions/upset tummy or whatever you like to call it you must do the noble thing and report it for the sake of the many hundreds of others. Whilst I can understand how you didn't want to spoil any more of your holiday you put many others at risk.

Hi Mr/Hughes - I'm sure the medical staff were following an absolute zero tolerance policy as defined by some higher authority ~ the doctor said as much to me. We've has the vomiting bug before as a family and all gone down like flies with it and experienced the symptoms. This was not it. Neither were the later incidents. Quite frankly it would have been masochistic in the extreme to have voluntarily banged ourselves up by reporting this. Incidentally as a doctor is there any mileage in the comments below from Mr. Purvis and the attached answers? Could Malarone be the cause? This was something that persisted on and off for over a week and has stopped since the weekend when we all stopped taking Malarone.

Hello Mr Walters. Malarone could be the cause as diarrhoea is one of its many side effects, however unfortunately for your wife/daughter, again once reporting diarrhoea on a ship, the medical staff simply have to follow protocol. If an outbreak later followed and it turned out to be Norovirus and protocol wasn't followed, there would be big problems for the ship. Port health authorities are very strict, particularly in Brazil where I assume you were. All records are often carefully checked at the ports. Please do not blame the medical staff. Even if the doctor suspected another cause, if you fit the criteria (ticking the boxes as you say) you must be confined. I know from experience that the worst part of our job is having to confine people. We hate it. We hate spoiling passengers holiday. It's actually very draining and upsetting when the passengers get upset with us. After all usually our job is to help people. On the other hand an outbreak is horrendous for all concerned. I really feel bad for you and i'm sorry you had a bad experience but please do that just that. Put it down to experience.

Hello again Wendy - we had some discussions before the cruise and wondered how you had enjoyed it? Did you find the dance floor big enough for your Fred and Ginger moves? We really enjoyed the whole experience - even the 4 days at sea both ways which I was a bit dubious about. We were slightly disappointed in the size and amount of the insects on the Amazon, as we experienced more and larger ones previously, but we did our last trip in a November, so maybe that is the difference. How did you find flying from a regional airport and picking up from a larger one? Did you have to wait long at Cardiff? We are doing something similar next month as we are flying from Norwich and picking up from Durham or thereabouts, just hope it wont add too much extra time to the flight, although this time we are only 30 minutes from home as opposed to nearly 5 hours from Manchester!! Liz xx

Hello Liz, thank you yes we had an amazing time. What an experience. My only regret is that I was too daft not to have arranged to meet you on board. I often wondered if I had spoken to you and not realised it. I would like to thank you again for all the advice you gave me beforehand. The dance floor was a nice size, but we didn't do as much dancing as we'd hoped as my partner had a bad knee for the first week. We did a bit of dancing on the second week - not exactly Fred and Ginger though, more like Fred and Wilma. I also enjoyed the sea days more than I thought I would. I had planned to do lots of classes and things but in the end I got extremely lazy and hardly moved from my sun bed for 4 days. I went into the pool a few times and had fun bobbing up and down with the huge surf that the rocking of the ship was creating. We didn't have anything to compare so we were ecstatic the first time we saw a huge moth. It was easy to spot the first-time Amazon cruisers as there was a great crowd of us pointing and going "oooooh" around the moth. We took off from Bournemouth and landed 20 or so minutes later at Cardiff where we were on the ground for 2 hours. At the time the 2 hours felt like 2 days, but in hindsight it wasn't really a big deal. The toilets were open, refreshments were available and we were sitting in surprisingly comfy seats. On the return journey we were only on the ground in Cardiff for an hour which was much better. I hope you enjoy your next holiday and that your pick up in Durham is not too lengthy. Thank you again for all you advice. I'd love to know if I met you!! Wendy x

Wendy - I spent most of the days on a sun bed too!! We ate in the Thistle on table 112 - in the middle section of the restaurant on first sitting. My husband wore the Bob Marley hat with dredlocks (!) on tropical night. Sadly never went near the gym - far too energetic for us ha ha!! however, we did take the stairs most of the time and not the lift. We were on deck 4 so the only time we got where we were going "on the flat" was in the evening, aiming for the Thistle, and also we were the far end of the corridor (near to the pointy bit as I call it) so it seemed like a mile long hike to get there - breakfast and lunchtimes we ate in the Palms Cafe. Hi Liz, I must have come across you then. I wish in hindsight that I'd asked everybody if they were you, although I'd probably have got a few strange looks. We were first sitting in Thistle too, table 8 in the same row as the two lovely little girls. I think I recall your husband! I was also at the floating restaurant on that rather soggy Friday. I expect I sat next to you on a sun bed one day without even realising it. We were also on deck 4 - 4061 - in the middle of both the pointy end and the blunt end. I'm still gushing with wonderful memories of the cruise and all the incredible things we saw. I've written a review but seem to be in trouble for writing too much waffle. Oh well. Best wishes, Wendy x

We were also on this cruise and I remember your two lovely little girls. They were very well behaved and a credit to you. I thought it was a nice touch that the waiters got them helping out with the 'Happy Birthdays' in the Thistle Restaurant. I'm sorry to hear about your wife and daughter's illness and I'm glad it didn't spoil your whole Amazon experience.
Question by Purvis, Wymondham (09 Mar 10 15:03) about this REVIEW
Just out of interest, what malaria tablets were your wife and daughter taking? There were many passengers taking a particular make who experienced tummy upsets with no other symptoms of norovirus at all, and I wonder if this is what the problem was.
Answer by Walters, Whitehill (11 Mar 10 10:29) to a QUESTION by Purvis (09 Mar 10 15:03)
Hi again - we were all on Malarone as well. There were a few stomach wobbles throughout the cruise and when we got back. Having learnt from bitter experience and being 100% confident it was not the gastro bug we didn’t report anything again - probably not what the ship's medical staff would have wanted but then they shouldn't have been so over the top with our initial incident. Thank you all for your kind comments about the girls. I think they stored up all there bad behaviour for when we go home!
