We have just cruised for 13 nights to the Canaries on Boudicca. Having read various reports we were not certain what to expect. However we had a pleasant experience with little sign of Norovirus. The cabin was large with plenty of storage and a bath! Dining was well managed to ensure that no infection was passed from guest to guest. All salt, pepper, butter and sugar was in packets and the buffet was served to us rather than have implements passed from hand to hand. As far as we could tell from attendance for dinner there was little, if any, infection on board. The fish and meat were good and the soups excellent. Salads were inventive and tasty. Vegetables were limited and in small portions. We found the desserts to be average - nothing to shout about but adequate. As it was necessary to allocate waiters to serve in the buffet the level of service in the dining room was a little slow but certainly as fast as could be expected on short staffing. We had no waiting at dinner - the only marginally slow part was the serving of drinks and toast at breakfast.

The entertainment was fun and the resident theatre company entertained us well. The lectures were interesting and informative. The visiting cabaret were good. The only moan was the Neptune lounge's in ability to seat all those who wished to see the shows.

We were docked in Funchal on a lovely sunny day one day before the flooding. We could not get into La Palma because of 50 knot winds and so trundled on to Santa Cruz where we were able to dock that evening and thus spend an evening and a day on Tenerife. The weather was good throughout and we just got in ahead of the storms that flooded France!

We thought the dress code was not adhered to by some of the ladies. Most of the men wore dinner suits for formal nights but the ladies were more under dressed than we expected.

Altogether everything that could b e done to help us to enjoy ourselves was done. Well done Boudicca for managing to come through all your problems and still be smiling.

Question by Young, Spain (10 Mar 10 19:46) about this REVIEW
Have you cruised with other cruise lines? If so, how does Fred Olsen compare? We´ve done Celebrity and Royal Caribbean but feel that the large ships are not for us. Would appreciate your comments.

We have also travelled P and O and Celebrity. We found the atmosphere on Boudicca slightly claustrophobic though this was probably more to do with it being a cold weather cruise in part and passengers being confined to the lounges. This cruise was full and the extra added cabins without added public rooms have maybe caused this. The atmosphere was friendly but different. More homely but somehow not special. Other guests were mostly older than us = we are 71 and 67. Fred is like having a good time at a friend's house and the other two feel more like a good hotel. Fred is more informal in most respects whilst I felt a bit special with the other two. If there is anything else you think I can add please ask again.

I am sorry to be so late in answering your question. We had a balcony suite which was very comfortable and I am sure a junior suite will be good for the parents. The cabin was well soundproofed - 8007. We had a small life boat partially obstructing the view from the balcony but there was plenty of room to sit out. I think that a Junior Suite will be ideal for a first experience of cruising.
