Flawless cruise around South America with Fred Olsen Black Watch just got better and better. From Rio to Lime (the middle section of the South American World Cruise) and from heatsweltering deserts to glaciers and volcanoes - and we saw penguins, pelicans, sea lions, albatross and much more. We visited exciting cities, including vibrant Rio, Ushuaia the most southerly city in the world, had two wonderful stops on the Falkland Islands, rounded Cape Horn on a perfect day, a magical trip up the Chilean Fjords, and a special visit to Robinson Crusoe Island, which even included a historical twinning with Largo in Fife. Fred even managed to calm the seas and we had the smoothest cruise we have ever had but, very sadly, the tsunami following the Chilean earthquake devastated the island and we feel desperately sorry for the inhabitants who must have endured a terrible night less than 48 hours after we left them. The happy smiling crew were superb and we had the ever cheerful Ronnie Finch as our Cruise Director and Terle Ulset (\"buckle up and enjoy the ride\") as the master of the Black Watch. There were very informative talks and lots of friendly fellow cruisers - it was a very happy experience. Although flight home was delayed by unscheduled stop at Panama to refuel, we could not fault both Thomas Cook and Fred Olsen on their care and attention to a situation which was quite beyond their control.
Quality of Food5
The food was the usual excellent Fred Olsen high standard.
Entertainment5
The Black Watch Show company are excellent and always enjoy their shows. Also, the Black Watch Orchestra deserves a special mention as they are very skilled musicians.
Shore Excursions5
The best shore excursion on the cruise for us was the trek across West Point Island on the Falklands to see the albatross and penguins, followed by a free afternoon tea in the farmhouse (for 800 passengers!), and other excursions were very good.
Staff5
Ronnie Finch is a supurb Cruise Director, but it is difficult to pick out any individual as all the staff are caring, friendly and very helpful.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Not applicable - this was the oldies cruise!!
Onboard Activities5
Yes. Plays, choirs, informative talks, etc.
Cabins3
The cabin was fine for us alkthough the \"L\" shape configuration beds is not luxurious.
