I decided to try Fred Olsen, Black Watch last December as I wanted to visit Christmas Markets on the continent. I travelled alone and have to admit that this was one of the most enjoyable cruises in comparison to the many others I have taken on the very new larger ships. Most things went wrong, late arrival due to bad weather experienced on the previous cruise, complete different itinery , closed ports, late arrivals at various destinations, coaches breaking down, water pipes bursting on the ship ,captain getting sick, confined to his cabin and many other things. All this sounds disasterous but I cannot stress enough how the staff came through all these trials and tribulations to make the whole reduced in time trip enjoyable. The company reimbursed each passenger with so much compensation.
The food I thought was most enjoyable for the price paid, pleasant waiters make a big difference, a smile goes a long way, but of course if a passenger is determined not to enjoy the cruise because of things happening not to their taste then not even the best comedian in the business can change their set faces.
I had a single cabin, (which was not at double fare!!) It had lots of storage space with a larger than average single bed. The cabin and carpet had recently been refurbished along with a new large bathroom, this was ongoing all through the cruise, apparently it is Fred Olsen policy if anything gets stained (carpets, mattresses etc then it is outed) , Workmen were never far away in the various corriders.
I found the whole of the staff, mainly of Far Eastern origin all to be pleasant and helpful.
I shall be booking again for next December and hope it to be as enjoyable as the last , even if there are no hiccups.
