Black Watch

Overview: Black Watchis a comfortable but not luxurious ship best suited to the older traveler seeking a British cruise environment, where relatively formal attire is the norm. Cruises are well organized, with interesting itineraries and free shuttle buses in many ports of call.

Returned yesterday from 2 weeks aboard BW to the Azores. We had been notified beforehand that the ship would be deep cleaned on its repositioning from Rosyth to Dover, and that restrictions would be in place , due to outbreaks of noro virus. We felt even more reassured when we boarded and realised that every precaution possible was in place, and remained that way for the first 72 hours after which we were declared healthy and life returned to normal. During that first 72 hours, our admiration for all the crew in creased even more, if that is possible. The added precautions made their lives even busier, but as usaul, the exceptional level of service never faltered . Our thanks to Peter Reeves and all his staff.

The trip down was smooth, and for us, we particularly looked forward to the Azores, but our stay at Horta was not possible due to strong winds preventing safe entrance to the harbour. Obviously we were dissapointed, and listened to the inevitable complaints that started straight after the captain's announcement. I would rather be safe than injured!!

Madeira was tremendous..I joined a small group who walked with an excellent guide, along the levadas, high up in the hills..a superb trip..I wish FO laid on more trips for those of us who enjoy exercise! hat was certainly the highlight of the cruise for me

At Tenerife, Fred Olsen JR came on a result we found out about the changes that will be made to both Boudicca and BW within the next 14 mnths..more seated restaurant space, a music bar on top deck and a small cafe serving Belgian chocolate drinks..and the reassurance that the BW has another 10 years to go..brilliant.

Lisbon was another highlight as we sailed in early morning on 15/10 and did not leave until early afternoon the next was lovely to have so much relaxed time..and especially good for the crew to get an evening off ashore!

Have I got any complaints??..absolutely always I come on board feelinga bit worn down by life, and leave at the end of the stay feeling completely pampered and relaxed...always surprised when I hear the predictable grumbles about petty issues.!

Enjoyed this cruise just as much. We too were disappointed at the missed port but gives us an excuse to do it all again sometime. Must mention the very friendly people we met especially one young man who kept me informed of the bread & butter pudding! Black Watch is a truly friendly and homely ship, let's hope the improvements dont spoil her. Orphan Pat .
