DISAD-`VANTAGE` FARES

Reviewed By: on
DISAD`VANTAGE`Fares
A lovely cruise on QV Adriatic Venture, from 15th May to 1st June, first rate entertainment, food and Ports of Call, less Sicily, Palermo is a traffic jam with unsafe paths, Messina a rubbish dump. I realize the rest of the island is beautiful but with short port stays there is little chance of getting there and these two ports are not worth visiting. A must visit is the VENITIAN ISLAND OF BURANO, every house a different colour and a small canal runs down the centre of the main street. The male an female show dancers, must be the best afloat, and we have seen a few. Some of the solo stars were amazing, on this cruise they must have had the best speakers and performers.
This was the first time we were encourage to use the new `Vantage` fares and get $280 on board spending, at a cost of £1979 per person for an outside cabin, with restricted view, with the promise that if prices dropped an adjustment would be made. A month before ocean view cabins were being offered at £1249 and balcony at £1449! We therefore expected at least an up grade and in spite of a promised review by "an executive" none was received and no adjustment was made, therefore `Vantage` fares cost us over £700 more than it could have been.
We are Platinum World Club members and have sailed with Cunard many times , starting in 1995 and feel really cheated by the new fares structure. It is unlikely we shall ever cruise with Cunard again. The on board reservations staff did eventually make contact with the head office and we received a bland reply listing the advantages of the fare structure BUT not stating what the fare was at the time of sailing, which was the crucial point! There was an apology for not providing the `Executives` response to my concerns. So be warned, unless you have a specific reason by dates our location of cabins you would be well advised to await Sail Away prices rather than Disad-`Vantage` fares.

I couldn't agree more about the vantage fare con. Our travel agents actually told us that if we booked vantage fare and the cost was reduced we would get either an on board credit or an upgrade. I was really annoyed to find that this really never happens as they do not reduce the 'vantage' fare, merely introduce a new fare called the 'getaway' fare. I wrote to Peter Shanks but received a similar reply to yours from the customer service team. However, the day before we sailed, we paid for an upgrade to Princess Grill. The difference was amazing but I still feel cheated about the vantage fare. If something appears to be too good to be true, then it probably is. I shall remember this for future travel and will only book nearer the time I want to cruise. I wish I didn't like Cunard so much, although the Celebrity Solstice are a good second choice in my opinion.

I have suspected from the launch of Vantage fares that they really did not offer much - it seemed fairly obvious that Cunard would use the detail in the terms of initial and later fares to get out of offering very much by way of compensation to those who booked early and found much better (cheaper) deals came along later and at the last minute. But wife and I take the view that if the deal is acceptable to us at whatever time we choose to book, then why should we whine when some better deal comes along later to someone else's advantage. If the deal isn't good enough - don't take it! We book early when we want to ensure we get exactly the cruise we want; we wait for last minute deals when we are less fussy and are ready to accept whatever stateroom is provided and whatever date and itinerary is available.

A good review and I totally agree with your views about these so called Vantage-we have done the same for a cruise on the Victoria on the 7th July, like you I am expecting perhaps an upgrade but reading you're comments its probably unlikely.Because of work we always have to book well in advance,so we are now dis advantaged, too late to cancel- the whole thing is a total joke and like you this will probably be our last cruise on Cunard. In fact with only 5 weeks to go,bearing in mind what we have paid Cunard have not even allocated our cabin yet (guarantee GA) and I see that according to there web site total availability for all Brittania cabins-not the way to treat regular customers!

I was under the impression anyone booking Vantage was able to choose their preferred cabin at time of booking or, at the very least given their cabin allocation. Surely, that is one of the ''advantages'' of booking ''Vantage'' hence the higher charge.

Thank you. Perhaps as you have not been allocated a cabin yet, you have a good chance for an upgrade.
