We flew from Heathrow to Miami on American Airlines, economy class. The food was standard airline food nothing exciting and received only one meal and one snack during the 11 hour flight. Flight was uncomfortable thought more leg room would have helped. we did not enjoy the flight.
If we thought that the flight was bad - reception at Miami airport was worse. It took approx just over two hours from leaving plane until passed through immigration. On leaving the plane we appeared to walk for miles only to double back on ourselves to reach passport control. i often wonder if Americans want visitors to their country because the staff are so unfriendly, slow and could not care less about you just having travelled 11 hrs and just want to get through. I realize that they have a job to do but its the time they take to do it. Ive experienced other american airport but I felt that Miami to date has been the worst.
We got hotel JW Marriott Miami but had to wait on board bus for about 20min while the courier handed out 12" pieces of wool to attache to our suitcases for ID the following day. On disembarking from bus we were then faced with a flight of steps to take our suitcases up with no assistance from hotel staff or anyone else. The accomodation was fine. the following day was organised chaose getting on to the buses but after that on arrival at the ship everything went very smoothly and efficiently no complaints there and were on board in no time.
ON BOARD QV
The stateroom with balcony allocated on deck 8 was a comfortable size with adequate wardrobe space.
Full marks to Cabin Steward 'Roggie' for his efficient, pleasent, courteous and very helpful manner throughout the whole voyage.
First impressions of the ship was impressive on the surface looked very clean. the decor was soothing elegant and everything you would expect from Cunard. however i felt that Hygiene lacked slightly especially in the Lido restaurant. I never once throughout the voyage saw one of the tables being sprayed or wiped clean after use. I realize that some tables were being in constant use but i think there should have been where possible a wipe with a disinfectant cloth occassionly at least. I once saw a passenger wipe his mouth and face with his napkin as he finished his meal, lay the napkin down, for the waiter to come along wipe the crumbs from that table with that cloth. Sorry but not acceptable.
The Lido Meals - There was a great chice of food at every meal Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner. However what it was lacking was the ability to keep hot food warm that is my only criticism of the food because the cold food was an excellent selection.
Brittania Restaurant Deck Three second sitting. - I think choice of meals could have been better (it probably suited most people) several comments made re this by guests at surrounding tables. Also standard of food fell well below anything I have had on previous cruises (with Cunard, Princess and Thompson). It was either cold (sent back on at least two occassions) and I prefer my meat well done and reqested same each night only to have to send it back three nights to be recooked as the blood was still showing. Now having said that The waiters we Had 'Reggie & Ramon' & Machalie were very helpful, courtious, and could not do enough for you I do not blame them in any way as they appeared to be as dissappointed as I was in the qualty of the food.
Entertainment
Only on three occassions did we visit the show in the evening and walked out during one it was rather dissapponting. Tried going to Hemispheres one night but again walked out with everyone else rather than suffer ear damage. Did not do much else although i believe there was a wide varity on hand but that was a personal choice and would not like to disswade anyone else from the other entertainment because some of it did look good.
My wife and I are avid readers and went on this cruise to relax, read enjoy the cruise, weather etc which I must say we did.
We spent a lot of time in the Garden Room so relaxing and comfortable and if the weather had been inclement (which it wasnt) we would have been just as happy relaxing in the many areas available within the ship itself.
As regards the ports of call unfortunately we were among those confined to cabin with upset stomaches at Aruba but it looked very nice & sorry we missed our trip ashore. The highlight of the cruise must be the Panama Canal very very impressed and made the whole two weeks worthwhile.
Costa Rica we took the skywalk tour which I believe from other passengers on return to be the best that had been on offer Nicaragua took trip to Colonial Leon, expensive for what we did travelled there climbed onto roof of church and drove back.
Quatamala even less on offer did not book trip styed on board after short waklk ashore.
Huatulco Mexico bookeed trip for shopping & show. Well we saw the show but not much in way of shopping because the guide left with the bus and left about 8 of us standing waiting resulting on us missing half the trip. we had to join onto another bus but that had already completed part of the trip (some of those left refused to go any further and returned to the ship) Im glad we continued because the show was very good.
Manzanillo again we did not book a trip and just went ashore and wandered around the town after lunch in the afternoon.
If you like to dress up for the evening and just casually wander around the ship viewing everything and everyone enjoying themselves that is going on but not particularly joining in anything which we like to do then this has it.
I have not been put off cruising and I will cruise again with Cunard and on the Queen Victoria.
Previously I have cruised with Cunard (Maiden voyage QM2 Carribean), Thomson (on Emerald on carribean) Thomson (on Celebrity Red Sea) and last year Diamond Princess (Australia & Far east)

We booked with British Airways but flew with American Airlines Heathrow to Miami mid March and had 2 hot meals, a snack plus lots of drinks. The service was pretty good and the flight was OK, a little cool but only took 9 hours. Thankfully we had less than an hour to wait in immigration. We flew back with BA to Heathrow from Barcelona at lunchtime, didn't expect a hot meal but only got a drink & a packet of cheese biscuits! So much for the cutbacks.

Sorry but I meant to include return travel from LA. We flew back from LA with Virgin Atlantic paid slightly higher for Premium Economy but it was well worth it. very comfortable and service was excellent with a choice of meal Menu. the flight seemed quicker than the 10 and a half hours it took. highly recommend it.

WE ALSO DID SAME CRUISE, AND STAYED AT THE MARRIOT MARQUIS HOTEL MIAMI. WE HAD NO PROBLEM WITH HAVING TO CARRY OUR SUITCASES FROM THE COACH. THIS WAS ALL DONE FOR US BY THE HOTEL STAFF WHO WERE WAITING FOR US. THE HOTEL WAS EXCELLENT, AND WE WAS MORE THAN IMPRESSED BY THIS BEAUTIFUL HOTEL. ENTERTAINMENT ON THE SHIP, WAS POOR. MOST OF THE SHOWS, AND EVEN THE GUEST SINGER WAS THE SAME AS SIX MONTHS AGO! ! NOT SO BAD IF THEY WERE ALL NEW TO YOU, BUT OFTEN AFTER SECOND DINING, THE SHIP SEEMED EMPTY. THIS MAY BE BECAUSE CUNARD ALLOW DRINKS TO BE TAKEN ON BOARD, SO PEOPLE DRINK ON THEIR BALCONIES. WE DID EXCURSIONS IN MOST OF THE PORTS. THESE WERE NOT GOOD VALUE FOR THE MONEY, AND THE PORTS ESPECIALLY HUATULCO, MEXICO WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING. WE ENJOYED THE FOOD SERVED ON THE SHIP, AND EVERYONE DID THEIR VERY BEST TO LOOK AFTER US. TIPPING IS ANOTHER ISSUE THAT MUST BE LOOKED AT. WE ALWAYS PAY THE TIP ON OUR ACCOUNT THAT IS SUGGESTED. BUT NOW SO MANY DO NOT, IT IS EMBARRASSING IF YOU DO NOT GIVE A TIP TO YOUR WAITERS, WHO HAVE SERVED YOU ALL WEEK, WHEN THE REST OF THE TABLE WHO HAVE OPTED OUT DO. THIS RESULTS IN EITHER TIPPING TWICE, OR IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE NOT TIPPING AT ALL!!!. MY LAST GRIPE IS THAT WHEN WE BOOKED WITH CUNARD QUITE LATE. WE WERE TOLD ALL THAT WAS AVAILABLE AND GUARANTEED, WAS A OCEAN VIEW CABIN, OR AN UPGRADE. WHEN OUR CABIN WAS ALLOCATED WE SAW IT WAS AN OBSTRUCTED VIEW. THE CABIN WAS VERY DARK, WITH NO REAL VIEW OF THE SEA. WHEN WE PHONED CUN ARD, THEY SAID WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE OCEAN VIEW (WHICH WASNT) WAS OBSTRUCTED, THAT THEY WAS SORRY. AS WE HAD PAID TO UPGRADE OUR FLIGHTS AND WAS SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY FOR THE HOLIDAY, IT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING. I PHONED OFTEN BEFORE OUR CRUISE AS WE WANTED TO PAY AND UPGRADE OUR CABIN. BUT THERE WAS NO AVAILABILITY, BUT ON MY FIFTH CALL I WAS TOLD I COULD GO ON A WAIT LIST. THIS OF COURSE WAS FAR TO LATE, AND WE HAD TO MAKE DO IN OUR CABIN. WE HAVE CRUISED QUITE A LOT OF TIMES, AND THOUGH I STILL WOULD CRUISE WITH CUNARD AGAIN. I WOULD MAKE SURE OF THE CABIN WE WAS GETTING, AND HOPE THAT THE ENTERTAINMENT HAS GOT BETTER!
