Queen Victoria - Great ship if a little claustrophobic in some places

Having sailed from Southampton on numerous times we have learnt our lesson and decided to travel down the day before and stayed at the Holiday Inn on their 'cruise and stay' deals - I'd highly recommend doing this. We had a top-floor room overlooking the harbour and so woke to a wonderful view of the Queen Victoria. A taxi (all included in the deal) picked us up from the hotel in the afternoon and we were though customs etc and on board in no time at all (about 30 mins in total, far better than for the Queen Mary and QE2 departures we'd been on), well done Cunard for this.

The ship is lovely although slightly let down my being a bit more 'fake' than the Queen Mary having hardly any real teak decking (painted decks) and fake dark wood interiors. We had booked a deluxe inside cabin as we wanted the size of room rather than the sea view/balcony as were unsure of the weather in late October and would be spending most of the days ashore. Cabin spotless and steward unobtrusive. We had the anniversary package, well worth it just for the free photograph so were greeted with flowers, champagne and chocolates.

We were at first seating for dinner in the Britannia restaurant. Our table was under the balcony and, with all the dark wood interiors, it did seem slightly claustrophobic and a little noisy especially during rough weather as it is at the stern of the ship. Make sure if you want water on your table to ask for bottled water as the water put on your table was very expensive!

Our itinerary was changed due to a public transport strike at Barcelona (well done again Cunard for this) so we went to Gibraltar, Palma, Ajaccio, Rome, Monte Carlo and then Barcelona. We did our own things at all of these ports (easy with Cunar's courtesy buses into the main centres) of call except for Rome where we took Cunard's 'Treasures of Rome' walking tour as it was our first time there and wanted to see as much as possible - although slightly expensive it was well worth it and I would recommend the tour to anyone.

Only thing to let the whole cruise down was the entertainment. It mostly consisted of dancing which some parts worked, some parts (contemporary) didn't. Due to a rather rough crossing of the Bay on the way back home we missed the scouse comedian who, it turned out, was the best act!

I did like the Queen Victoria but prefer the Queen Mary. However we have booked to go on the new Queen Elizabeth in November which, I am told, will be more art deco in style/décor so should be more light and airy compared to the Victorian décor.
Quality of Food4
1st sitting, Britannia restaurant.
Entertainment3
Best- Liverpudlian comic (unfortunately we didn't see his own show due to weather conditions) Worst - contemporary dance routines
Shore Excursions5
Did all ourselves apart from Rome - 'Treasures of Rome', very informative, enjoyable and meant we could miss all the queues!
Staff4
Maitre d' - unfortunately at a particularly rough sea moment our waiter spilled some milk onto my dress - the maitre d' made sure it was dry cleaned and returned to me the next day free of charge.

Know what you mean,we'd been on QM2 before QV. However, now been on QV twice and love it. Do try it again. Yes its not as big and grand as her big sister, but then perhaps that is part of the attraction. It doesn't take forever to get from one end to another. More intimate then QM2. The plastic deck is a bad move. You have to watch when it is icy, wet, or hot, been on board with all 3, Shame they didn't use wood, it just looks, and feels cheap and nasty. Given this is our premier uk cruise line, bit like BA, when they are not on strike, going the plastic Ryanair way on back of seats.......white star service......no, don;t think so. Part from that, there are cruise lines, and there are plenty, however, there is only one cunard, simply the best! peter lockhart (cunarder no. 12,354!!!), ayr, scotland.

That was so enlightening to read your view on QV. We are cruising with her May 3 around the Canaries to celebrate one of my big 0 birthdays (its a secret)....best news of all is we have been given an upgrade from closed in balcony on Deck 4 to open balcony on Deck 8 - and because of info I picked up from this site, bought OBC and got $2 to the £. I had been advised it was definitely a cheaper way to buy dollars, but didnt realise I would get such an excellent rate. Am now ticking off the calendar....Kind regards

Hi Patty. Can you please tell me in more detail the OBC arrangement? When and how, etc. ? Did you not use your credit card? Did you buy using your debit card, or what? Goin on QV in June so really interested in your arrangement.
Answer by Patty, Wakefield (07 Apr 10 21:19) to a QUESTION by Warren (07 Apr 10 08:51)
Hi Warren. I used my debit card - easy procedure by phoning Cunard on 0845 0710300. I think they will only accept debit cds but check out. They were most helpful and transaction took about 8 mins. OBC gives you a higher exchange rate as I have discovered. You have to decide on the amount you will be spending (?) and whatever credit is left at the end of the cruise (if any) will be repaid into your account. Hope this is clear. If not, ask again. Just over 3 wks to go before we board QV and getting very excited. Regards

Thanks so much, Patty, will be doing what you have advised - probably some time next month as cruise not till mid-June. Will post results after cruise for others to benefit from your advice. Enjoy your cruise.
